1 in 3 women worldwide experience violence in their lifetime. On International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and every day, we stand against all forms of gender-based violence. We encourage everyone to take part in conversations during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence and reflect on concrete steps that you can do. We all have a role to play in preventing and addressing gender-based violence. When it comes to reusable masks, remember to follow this simple rule: if you use it, wash it. It is important to ensure that masks are clean and dry before use. When laundering a mask in a washing machine, use a hot water temperature. A hot dryer setting is a good idea as well. If you don’t have a washing machine at home, you can wash the mask thoroughly by hand using soap and warm/hot water and allow it to dry completely before wearing it again. A mask should maintain ...its shape without damage after washing and drying. Consider sending your child to school with more than one clean mask and a breathable bag or container in which to store the mask during nutrition breaks. Don’t forget to give lots of praise to children for their efforts to keep COVID-safe. For more information on masks, please visit: https://www.phsd.ca//guidance-for-wearing-non-medical-masks #Sudbury #PublicHealth #Manitoulin #FaceCoverings #COVIDsafe

Public Health Sudbury & Districts declares COVID-19 outbreaks at Extendicare Falconbridge and Extendicare York in Greater Sudbury Public Health Sudbury & Districts has declared COVID-19 outbreaks in two Greater Sudbury long-term care homes. Outbreaks were declared at Extendicare Falconbridge and Extendicare York following reports of two cases of COVID-19 among staff members, one in each facility. To date, no residents have tested positive in relation to these outbreaks. Publi...c Health is actively working with both long-term care homes to investigate the outbreaks and to protect residents and staff. The need for workers and everyone to monitor and screen for symptoms of COVID-19 and to stay home when ill, is critical for the health and well-being of everyone in our community. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, please take it seriously, even if they are mild, said Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Medical Officer of Health for Public Health Sudbury & Districts. Learn the symptoms, use the available screening tools, and get tested. We know this may result in making the difficult decision to call in sick to work or to not attend class, but everyone will thank you for it. This seemingly small action will go a long way in keeping our community COVID-safe and protecting vulnerable populations. Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reminding everyone to follow public health measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The safest options are to avoid non-essential travel, limit close contact to your own household members, stay home and do not attend work or school when ill, and to practise physical distancing, wear your mask, and wash your hands. For all outings, continue to screen yourself for symptoms and practise COVID-safe behaviours. Anyone who is planning to travel should be aware that COVID-19 continues to circulate at different levels around the province and the safest options are to stay in the area of your home community. Currently, Public Health Sudbury & Districts is in the Yellow/Protect zone. All travel to Green/Prevent zones should be avoided. Mental health issues in our community are increasingly complex, especially during these trying times. One thing we can all do is listen and instill hope by working together. Each year, through the Circles Sudbury program, Circles participants and staff work together to identify one key issue or community barrier to focus on called the Big View. Mental health support and access to affordable housing were identified as key and connected issues to focus on for the Big View in 20...19 and 2020. Watch the snapshot video of the Fighting Stigma and Finding Support event co-hosted by Public Health Sudbury & District’s Circles initiative and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s Dean Speaker Series held on March 11, 2020. The event featured a talk by mental health advocate Amy Willans and an interactive art exhibit of the Photovoice project developed by Circles participants. The art exhibit featured participant experiences with mental health, stigma, housing, and support.
