Generally I don't like to post thinks before they are finished but it isn't very often that I have two coats of arms on the go at the same time. The large one will be a while yet and the smaller one will be done soon. I'll post them when they are finished. #handcarved #coatofarms

I recently carved this 3ft tall phoenix. It is the 1st time that I've been ask the carve something for the express purpose of having it destroyed. This was commissioned by a photographer whose intention is to set it on fire and photograph and video it as a burns. I am looking forward to seeing the result. A basswood and walnut relief carving of an excavator was in someones stocking this year.

This carving was picked up today. It is an interpretation of a carving done in the 1930's by a German/American artist called the Flying Phoenix. There was only one photo available of the original so there's a lot of artistic license taken. I think it turned out okay certainly looks like the original from the side view. The owner is having it painted to look like black marble.

A smaller 10.5"10.5"1.5" coat of arms. It had to be detailed but not to delicate. It will be painted by the client to match a desk he is making.

Picked up today was this antiqued version of the Ontario coat-of-arms. The client wanted an old/retro look, like it was found hidden in a flea market. Painted with oil paints, distressed, and waxed, then mounted on barn board with it's original green paint. #woodcarving #handcarved #ontario #coatofarms

This a hand dovetailed pine hope chest I recently completed. It has a mom lion and three cubs carved in relief on the lid. There is only about 3/8" carving depth. The original image was provided by the client as it had personal meaning and was a gift. I just heard from the recipient, @therealmotherhood, who was thrilled to receive it. It is good to know my work brings joy.

This is an antique black forest clock (monk clock). I restored it slowly over the last few months. There were some structural issues but mostly cosmetic problems, some caused by previous repairs. I reproduced and or replaced a large number of the carvings many of which were damaged or missing. Everything is walnut wood and presented some real challenges. In the end hopefully you won't be able to tell what is original from what is new. The finish was dulled down after this photo was taken. #antique #clock #blackforestclock #woodcarving

More carving just for fun. Another copy of a Robert Prenzel carving. Amazing how much there is still to learn.

Spent the afternoon working on an art project. Scugog Council for the Arts is placing some Muskoka chairs around town this summer and asked for artists to paint the chairs. I don't paint but I thought I'd try carving on one. This is what I've got so far. Not sure how it will look when finished or if I will add more or change my mind all together. I'll keep you posted. The design drawn on cardboard shows how it should look on the chair. #handcarved #woodcarving #scrollwork #muskokachair

A follow up to the "what is this wing for" post from a few weeks ago. If you guessed a winged horse with a lions head you were right. This is a carving of a logo for Ruths Analytics and Innovation's Canadian office in Montreal. It is approximately 3ft tall and is carved from Basswood on a walnut background. #handcarved #griffin #logo #RuthsAnalytics
