Today we encountered Orcas in Haro Strait. The Orcas were Bigg's/Transient Orcas and we watched them hunting Seals! It was another wonderful day in the Salish Sea watching the oceans top predator.

This afternoon we encountered Orcas off Sidney! This was a perfect example of how Orcas can travel up to 100 miles a day. The Orcas we had encountered in the morning had carried on West and were way past Jordan River in the afternoon. However, we received a report from one of our former Naturalists that Orcas had been seen near Sidney Spit. We headed that way and caught up with the Orcas just south of the town of Sidney heading south. The Orcas were two young males, T60D & T60E, brothers. We followed the brothers south as they searched for Seals. Another great encounter!

Wow! This beautiful shot was captured on one of our tours in the past and when we came across it recently, we knew we had to share it! As you can see, the animal is a Sea Lion...but what species? See if you can guess whether this animal is a Steller/Northern Sea Lion or a California Sea Lion. But what are the differences between the two? Steller Sea Lions are drastically different in size to their smaller counterparts, the California Sea Lion. Steller Sea Lions weigh up to 2...200 pounds (males) or 800 pounds (females). California Sea Lions respectively weigh to 800 pounds and 250 pounds. Steller Sea Lions have a tan/reddish/gold coat (pale whiskers) whereas California Sea Lions have a dark brown coat with dark whiskers. California Sea Lions display a sagittal crest (skull crest) and have short hair; Steller Sea Lions have a bear-like, robust head and neck with a thick mane. Both of these incredible species have external ear flaps, characteristic of eared seals (not true seals). Are you ready to tell the species now? Share your guesses in the comments below! This information was gathered from http://blog.ptmsc.org//03/how-to-tell-difference-between.h that summarizes these key differences. #welikeourwhaleswild #fivestarwhales #sealion

This morning we encountered Orcas off Becher Bay. The Orcas were identified as the T69A's and were heading west against the tide. The T69A's are a pod of Bigg's Killer Whales that prey on Marine Mammals and they were hunting for Seals when we were with them. We also stopped off at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve to check out the Seals & Sea Lions. It was a great morning on the water!

Welcome to Wildlife of the Week. Continuing on our seabird trend, we are excited to showcase a fascinating (and adorable) creature! This bird is related to Auks and Murres, and is a charming species to the Salish Sea. You may have seen one of its relatives, the Rhinoceros Auklet, also in these waters. Generally crow-sized, the Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata) is not one of the largest seabirds, but it is easily spotted with its distinct bill and plumage. Has anyone seen this puffin before? If so, where? Share with us in the comments below! To learn more about this fantastic bird, read more on our website at www.5starwhales.com #welikeourwhaleswild

Today was another special day on the water with over 15 Orcas 5 minutes from Victoria Harbour :) The action actually started right in the mouth of the Harbour with a Gray Whale spotted crossing the Harbour entrance! The Gray Whale moved stealthily across the waterfront very close to shore and the reason was soon clear. As we left the Harbour we could see the blows from multiple Orcas 5 mins away, it was an incredible sight. The Orcas slowly made their way East towards Victori...a Harbour and were being very social, with many different pods in the mix. These were Marine Mammal eating Orcas known as Bigg's or Transients, so the Gray Whale was smart to stay out of the way. We watched as the Orcas continue to move towards Victoria at one point various groups bunched up and coming up together (see the video's in the comments section), it was an amazing sight! We also stopped off at Race Rocks to see the various Seals & Sea Lions that call this amazing place home. What an incredible day on the water :) See more
