"Shirley Dog" - 6x6 I have a "no dog portraits" rule, but made an exception for this Kootenay adventure pup who came along on many hikes and snowshoes this year. She's a happy character and this little painting made it under the Christmas tree. #kootenaylife #kootenayartist #adventuredog #nelsonbc #acrylicpainting #kootenaydog

I tried a number of different plein air set ups this summer to take my paints backpacking. I wanted to keep it light-weight and simple without lugging a tripod and pochade box up the trail. This is the final set-up I landed on: -small watercolour sketchbook -goauche paints (primaries, white, black, magenta, cyan) -painter's tape (can be re-used many times)... -lock n' lock container -3 watercolour brushes in different sizes -pencil and waterproof pen -papertower -zippered pouch to hold it all I liked using gouache paints for backcountry as they can be treated like watercolour or acrylic. You can make beautiful washes on the paper or paint in layers. Gouache paints also clean up really well with water and don't risk damaging your brushes. The container holds water in the bottom and becomes a small palette with the inner lid. It was water-tight so I could easily pack out my paint water and leave no trace.
