When you hear your child saying with words or behaviours that they are overwhelmed, believe them and lighten their load. Trauma can make the regular day to day stuff seem too big or too much some days. #achildssongservices #adoptioncompetenttherapist #adoptiveparents #adoptivefamily #fosterparents #fostercare #fosterfamily #traumatherapist #traumatherapy
Understanding the Grief and Loss of Adoption - Free Workshop Photo Credit: Karim Manjra on Unsplash Whether adopted at birth or at an older age, from foster care or internationally, the loss of parents, extended family and culture is trauma that impacts a child’s development in profound and lasting ways. Over the past few years there has been an amplification of the adoptee voice and what we are hearing loud and clear is that adoption influences the way people see themselves,... the way they relate others and their worldview. Recognizing and having a deep respect for the grief and loss inherent in adoption is the most important first step in developing the skills to parent in a connected and therapeutic way. In celebration of Adoption Awareness Month, A Child’s Song is offering this FREE workshop for adoptive parents, foster parents, adoption professionals and anyone wishing to understand the grief and loss that is inherent in adoption. This workshop will explore the impact of early loss and separation on a child’s development and look at how children process grief differently than adults. Participants will learn to identify and respond to a child’s grief in a way that promotes healing and secure attachment. Even more importantly, participants will learn how to come alongside an adoptee and sit with the discomfort of not being able to ‘fix’ or compensate for the loss of a parents, biological family or culture. We are honored to join you on your learning journey and our hope is that this workshop will offer both important insights and practical strategies. FREE Zoom workshop Thursday November 26/20 from 7-8pm (CST) presented by Andrea Dixon. Register by email to [email protected] and a confirmation along with the Zoom link will be sent to you. See more
November is National Adoption AWARENESS Month and our team at A Child’s Song is committed to helping others be more aware of the complexities of adoption. This is a good start! Thank you Robyn Gobbel, LCSW RPT-S - Attachment, Trauma, & Adoption.

We are celebrating Foster Care Awareness month here at A Child's Song. The role of a foster parent is a difficult one. Imagine opening your home and your heart to a child, caring for them, nurturing them, and then saying goodbye when it is time for the child to move on. It takes a special kind of person to love hard and then let go when the time is right. We have had the pleasure of working with some amazing foster parents over the years. Our entire team is constantly amazed... by the amount of dedication, hard work and love foster parents pour into the children they care for. Foster parenting is not an easy role, and oftentimes it's thankless and the commitment goes unrecognized. We want to acknowledge all that you do from sleepless nights, keeping up with a chaotic schedule, working to reconnect families, attending meeting after meeting, supporting children through transitions, advocating for children at school, and so so much more! We see you! Thank you for loving kids. See more

It’s never too early or too late to talk about race. Whether you are in a transracial family or not, it is important to start the conversation. Our children learn about race through our actions, let’s teach them to be informed and compassionate. Photo courtesy of: www.childrenscommunityschool.org. #talkingtokidsaboutrace
There is still time to register for this amazing opportunity! https://www.ethoslab.space/virtualworkshops

These last few weeks have highlighted that racism continues to persist in our society. It can be confusing and even uncomfortable to address this with your children. Please know that they DO need to talk about it. Children and youth are bombarded by messages in media, from friends and through their observations. Ask specific questions and share specific information so that they are clear about what it means to be an ally and actively work against racism. Demonstrate for y...our children that you are learning and are open to examining your own beliefs and where you might have to change your beliefs or your heart. There are many platforms for learning such as articles, podcasts, You Tube videos, blogs as well as some amazing children’s books. A Child’s Song will continue to refer you to important things to read and explore with your family. Become an advocate in your community. Speak against racism, support anti-racism campaigns, and look for opportunities to help. If you need some suggestions please contact our office. Our children are watching us and how we respond to racism moving forward will heavily influence their beliefs and the courses of action they choose. If you are parenting black children, they are watching you with their minds and their hearts. Check in with them. Learn from their experience. Let them feel what they feel. Ask what they need. LISTEN. Take care of yourselves and each other. Please reach out to our team if you and your family need support. #blacklivesmatter #transracialadoption #adoptionbc #adoptionmb
