Across Boundaries Mental Health 23.01.2021

Clive Mensah's death was senseless and unnecessary, with a lot of crucial questions left unanswered. There are many similarities to the situation with one of our past service users, Andrew Loku. Both men were killed within moments of interacting with police. Here at Across Boundaries, we would like noted, often times when someone is in distress, authorities assume it is a crisis. And in the case of a Black, Indigenous or racialized person, these assumptions are often made due to anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, stereotypes and biases held by the officers, leading to such horrific outcomes. Sadly this is far too common. This must end now.

On August 23rd, 2020, a police officer in Kenosha, Wisc. opened fire on Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man as he entered his car. He was shot seven times, while his three children were in the car waiting for him. As a result, all of NBA's Wednesday and Thursday playoff games postponed after players protest of Jacob Blake shooting. We want to particularly acknowledge the efforts of the Toronto Raptors in their protest systemic racism and police brutality in the Black community, especially our Black men. We can no longer be silent on issues that continue to affect our community. We want to support our players as they stand against Anti-Black racism.

Non-binary or genderqueer is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine. Non-binary people may identify as having two or more genders; having no gender; moving between genders or having a fluctuating gender identity (genderfluid); being third gender or other-gendered. Many non-binary individuals identify themselves using gender-neutral pronouns e.g. they/them in place of he/him, she/her and may use titles such as Mx in place of Mr, Ms, etc. 14 July is the annual celebration of International Non-Binary Peoples Day and is aimed at raising awareness and organizing around the issues faced by non-binary people around the world.

Todays word of the day is racism. When we talk about racism we usually focus on the overt individual racism ( ex. Racial slurs), others might face occasionally. However, there is also the systemic impact that racism has on racialized communities. Racism is about power and is upheld through ideologies and practices by dominate groups. As individuals, we have the power to disrupt these ideologies by questioning stereotypes and practices that seem to be the norm. As racialized,... people we can reclaim that power back. If you or someone you know is looking to find support navigating racism do not hesitate to contact us at 416 787 3007. _____________________________ Follow us and stay connected. #ABMentalHealth #ABWORDOFTHEDAY #MentalHealth #racialized #systemicracism #antiblackracism #unlearnracism
