ACT 26.01.2021

Day 12 - our final day! Composites hold many surprises for those unfamiliar with the basic design principles that must be followed in any application of these materials. Applying resin to fiber of any type (carbon, glass, aramid, etc.) and just ‘skinning’ over a part OR fabricating a component for the first time, rarely has a good outcome on the first try. Fiber orientation in a laminate is critical, if it is to meet the applied loads in service.... Fibers will only bear loads along their axial dimension (length). The correct placement of fiber plies must be oriented in the direction of the applied loads. The five basic design considerations are 1) Quasi-isotropic, 2) Symmetry 3) Balance 4) Thermal Balance and 5) Nested fibers. These are the five foremost Principals of Design instructed in ACT’s courses. #training #compositestructures #composites #compositestraining #compositedesign #LaminateDesign #ldnont #compositerepair #structuralrepairmanual #carbonfiberparts #carbonfiber #fiberglass

Possibly the most difficult portion of a fiberglass repair to a boat structure, is matching the colour of the existing Gelcoat. Even a newer boat, still as shiny as the day it left the factory, will have a slight colour change to it from the original, from only one season on the water. Ultraviolet light, weathering, water 'tea' stain, etc. will alter the original gloss, chroma and value of the Gelcoat. A host of factors affect the outcome of a successful colour match. Having ...an understanding of the basic processes involved, patience and practice, will eventually build your skills and confidence. Experimentation and dissatisfied customers due to less than spectacular results will always cost you more than proper training ever will! #training #composites #compositestraining #Marinevessels #boatlife #boatrepair #gelcoat #gelcoatcolormatching #yachties #canoelife #kayaking #fiberglassboats #ldnont

Lightning Strike Protection (LSP) is as critically important on a modern all-composite passenger airliner as it is on a wind turbine blade or carbon fiber sailboat mast, however, the materials and techniques vary greatly. On composite aircraft a conductive coating, typically of aluminum or copper foil mesh, covers the entire external surface of the composite components. On a wind turbine blade a heavy copper cable will run from the steel blade root out to the tip, connecting ...to a discharge 'puck'. A similar technique is used for a sailboat mast. These LSP components must be repaired whenever they are damaged from a strike. Pictured in order: LSP damage to an all-carbon aircraft wing skin. Lightning damage to the tip of a wind turbine blade. Static (lightning) discharge from an aircraft wingtip. #training #composites #compositestraining #compositestructures #ldnont #lightningstrike #lightningstrikerepair #staticdischarge #windturbines #Marinevessels #automotive #aviation #aerospace

Day 9: Core Function Core materials are constantly evolving just as every other material in composites technologies. The primary purpose of a core is to act as the same as a WEB in a BEAM structure. The strength (resistance to flexure) of a cored ‘sandwich’ laminate depends on the thickness of the core material, which increases exponentially. The choice of what core material to choose for your project largely depends upon the environment that the composite structure is to ope...rate in. Be it the heat and humidity of the Arabian Sea to the absolute zero of interplanetary space, balsa wood to aluminum foam, the material choices are almost endless! #training #compositestructures #compositestraining #composites #cores #compositescores #compositebonding #ldnont #engineering

Day 8: NDT Damage Propagation Damage in composite structures is most often invisible on the outside (external) surface of the structure. Delaminations, disbonds, fiber fractures and a host of other flaws can require the use of NDT techniques such as Phased Array Ultrasonics, Infrared Thermography, Shearography and more. Inter-laminate shearing of fiber plies that are undetected by simple ‘tap testing’ (listening for a detectable sound change when tapping) can propagate throug...h the structure until it fails catastrophically. Stay tuned for the return of ACT’s ‘NDT for Composite Structures’ course in 2021. #training #composites #compositestructures #compositestraining #ldnont #Delamination #compositefailure #structuralengineering #structuralfailure #damagepropagation #compositebonding #aviation #boatdesign #windturbine #aerospace #automotive

Yesterday ACT participated in the first-ever AMEC 2020 Virtual Maintenance Conference! Both recorded and live presentations were given throughout the day and though we encountered some technical difficulties of our own during our live demonstration, the event was a smashing success. We are happy to provide a recorded version of Wilson's live demonstration of a typical repair to the Lightning Strike Protective layer of an A220 aircraft wing section, via the all-new Microsoft H...oloLens2! We hope anyone who tuned in yesterday, will have a chance to see the full presentation here: https://youtu.be/OLKJcbCzIfw Well done to all the presenters and everyone at the AME Association, not least of which, @Louis Anderson!
