A HUGE shout-out to FAF Marching Band for putting on this incredible fundraiser in support of the Norma Scarborough Emergency Fund! FAF Marching Band is asking folks to "sponsor" each anti-choicer who attended the "Life Chain" event outside of Women's Hospital in Winnipeg earlier this month. So far, they've raised over $1300. You can make a donation here: https://bit.ly/3sIItQ5, with "40 Days for Life" in the first and last name fields in the "in honour of" box to help them get to their goal of $2300$50 for each anti-choicer in attendance!

Sign this petition in support of safe access (or "bubble") zones for Saskatchewan abortion facilities! Private Member Bill 605, An Act to Provide Safe Access to Abortion Services, would prohibit protesters up to 150 metres around each facility and ensure that no one can repeatedly harass or intimidate abortion workers in-person, by phone, or online. Six provinces in Canada have already passed bubble zone laws. Saskatchewan should be next!

Canada has committed to "realize the right to housing"but what does that really mean? Check out the National Right to Housing Network and the Women's National Housing and Homelessness Network's three new research reports, with details and recommendations on how to practically implement the #right2housing across Canada: https://ed.gr/dossy Housing stability is directly connected to people’s ability to protect and provide for themselves and, if they have them, their children.... People without housing or with insecure housing face higher risk of adverse health outcomes, including gender-based violence, lapses in prenatal and contraception care, lapses in sexual health care, and maternal death. It puts people at higher risk of sexual exploitation and violence both from predators and from the state. It is fundamental that the Federal Government commits to fulfilling people's right to housing. Housing is a basic human right that is critical to reproductive health and justice.

There are many ways in which our mental and sexual health are connected. Talking about sexual or mental health is taboo for many people, so it’s even harder to talk about all of the ways in which they are connected. Getting to know how they are related can help us make important connections, start crucial conversations, and when it makes sense, seek the support we need and deserve. This World Mental Health Day, visit our Sexual Health Hub to explore the connections between mental and sexual health and learn how you can better take care of your whole self! https://bit.ly/3f1l1qO

Le français suit // Pregnancy-related deaths and maternal mortality rates are significantly higher for Black mothers. Forced sterilization continues to be enacted on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) individuals. Black patients are chronically undertreated for pain. Children in racialized and Indigenous families continue to be disproportionately apprehended by child welfare agencies. Laws criminalizing the non-disclosure of HIV status are most often used to crim...inalize Black and other racialized communities. The promotion of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) like IUDs often overly target Black folks. The sexual health movement itself is still largely white-dominated, which raises questions like: Who gets to see themselves reflected in this work? and Who gets to feel safe going to the doctor? . We're proud to share on behalf of a collective of Canadian feminist activists the project: Then and Now: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1970 Abortion Caravan. In May 1970, seventeen women from Vancouver set out on a cross-country trek to reject Canada’s criminal abortion law and demand legal reform. They stopped in cities and towns along the way, performing acts of guerrilla theatre to show how women were suffering and dying from accessing illegal back-alley abortions. You'll find on our website a collection of papers on this history of the abortion caravan.

"For some, the fight is to not have children to have access to free and safe abortion and birth control whenever one needs, and to choose how and when to have children (if at all). For others, the fight is to have children to have a safe pregnancy and birth, and be able to raise their children into adulthood in a safe, loving environment, with their family intact. Both of these pursuits are more challenging for people of color and low income people. This means that the fight for reproductive justice encompasses not just pregnancy and birth (and, of course, the choice to plan and continue, or terminate, that pregnancy), but housing, schooling, community and police violence, and more."

''The UN has painted a bleak picture of what is to come. Their latest estimates say that lockdowns over a six-month period could leave 47 million women across the world unable to access contraceptives. This could lead to an estimated seven million additional unintended pregnancies. Many could take place in Latin America, where access to safe abortions has been limited by draconian laws and a lack of information. ''

Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights 08.03.2020

''Canada’s patchwork contraception coverage poses a real public health issue. If you don’t have extended health insurance, in Ontario the pill can cost as much as $470 per year out of pocket; IUDs entail a one-time fee of around $400 and last three to five years. The social ramifications of these costs are stark: unintended pregnancies disproportionately affect young adults, recent immigrants, rural residents and people of lower socioeconomic status.''
