I bet the same is true for you too. But for some reason, may people avoid doing the work for health because sometimes it just feels too hard to learn what is needed or seek out the best guidance or change their diet or give up a bad habit..... ... But I will say that usually the thing you think is impossible or too hard for you to do is very likely the thing you need to start doing. Let that sink in..... Happy Chinese New Year!!!! It is officially the Year of the Ox which I have a feeling is going to be AWESOME! Especially compared to last year for the world. Perspective is everything. Sometimes you just need to change your mind on a topic and the outcome becomes more ease I had a recent experience where I misinterpreted the intentions of a professional just because of the mood I went into the conversation with. It ended well, thank goodness, but maybe wouldn't have had I not quickly realized my part in the situation. My perspective was clouded by not having worked though a previous concern in my head and I projected it onto the... conversation inappropriately. So, I've learned that in complex situations, if there is something I have some control over and can influence, then I either step up and be active about it or step aside and stop complaining. If, on the other hand, I realize there is really nothing I can control in a particular tough situation, I do my very best to let it all go. In the end, it comes down to perspective in each situation and rearranging my mind about it so I can have more ease. This applies to health care too, at least for me. There are many things I can influence in my day to day that will move the needle on my own health, and the same applies to you. Think lifestyle shifts you can work on that can make you healthier, like better sleep quality, getting more nutrition, avoiding excess alcohol, etc. But there are some things I don't have complete control over, such as some of the pollution I'm exposed to, if the organic food I purchased if completely chemical free, and so on. In those cases I do my best and move on. I have learned to work on the things I can control and those I can't, I try to handle with as much grace and acceptance as I can muster. The sooner we learn that our daily habits have so much power, the better health we can all enjoy Happy Friday, health peeps! PLEASE READ: LATEST research showing the significant importance of appropriate Vitamin D3 supplementation and influence on recovery from viruses. Chris Kresser recently wrote:... Last month, a panel of 120 health and medical experts wrote an open letter to world governments calling for a widespread, immediate increase of vitamin D intake to 4,000 IU per day for healthy adults in order to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The experts pointed out that the scientific evidence linking vitamin D to COVID-19 outcomes is now sufficient to make this recommendation: Vitamin D modulates thousands of genes and many aspects of immune function, both innate and adaptive. The scientific evidence shows that: o Higher vitamin D blood levels are associated with lower rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection. o Higher D levels are associated with lower risk of a severe case (hospitalization, ICU, or death). o Intervention studies (including RCTs) indicate that vitamin D can be a very effective treatment. o Many papers reveal several biological mechanisms by which vitamin D influences COVID-19. o Causal inference modelling, Hill’s criteria, the intervention studies & the biological mechanisms indicate that vitamin D’s influence on COVID-19 is very likely causal, not just correlation. There is virtually no downside that I can see to a public health campaign that encourages (and even subsidizes) vitamin D repletion, both in the United States and worldwide. This is big news everyone!! I respect Chris Kresser as he is a functional medicine practitioner who is heavily invested in keeping on top of new peer reviewed research studies related to immune health like I am. And given I am a practitioner who focuses mainly on helping people learn to manage their health who have immune dysfunctions such as various autoimmune diseases, I always request my patients run at least two Vitamin D blood spot tests to determine if this is a factor in their failing health. Very often it is a big part of the equation and luckily is usually very easy to correct, giving major wins to those supplementing appropriately. Vitamin D is a fat soluble pro-hormone, so knowing your blood level before taking a higher dose is very important, and then tracking levels to find your sweet spot is essential. I carry blood spot test kits in the clinic you can have access to for only $100 CAD to test your D level - this is direct lab costs. Your conventional health care physician cannot test it through AHS in Alberta at this time, so a test kit like the one I have is your best option. Hi everyone! A few things have changed here at AcuPlus Wellness Clinic during 2020! What a year, right? Whew But 2021 is going to be better than ever!... Lucretia and I want to thank each and every one of you who have walked through our doors this past year. We've been grateful to see so many familiar and new faces in our clinic Hours will remain the same at least for early 2021: Tuesdays 10 am 6 pm Wednesdays & Thursdays 10 am 4 pm Fridays 10 am 3 pm As usual, all appointments must be pre-booked by calling 403-942-7070. The schedule tends to fill up quickly, so to ensure you receive care when you need it, please book ahead when you can. Acupuncture services obviously need to be in person! However, all consultations can be done in person or virtually using Zoom. Your sense of safety is a continued priority. As per the city bylaw, masks are required in the reception area of the clinic. You do not have to wear one during your Acupuncture sessions, however. We have always made cleanliness and sanitization priorities at the clinic, but we have increased washing of door knobs/handles and tabletops between patients using appropriate, safe cleaning agents, on top of the regular cleaning of treatment tables, clean sheets (of course!) and more. Haha! How many of your can relate to this? I genuinely had planned to do lots of cleaning in my home this week off from work. But that did NOT happen - yet, at least. I found myself listening to my body's requests to rest more, lean into my need for sleep and NOT DO so much right now. And you know what? It has felt amazing!!!... Today I woke up with more energy and drive than I've had for quite a while all because I chose to listen to my body and leave the house cleaning for later. Following is something from Chris Kresser that may inspire you: "There is a famous story in the Taoist tradition about a farmer who had worked his crops for many years: One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. Such bad luck, they said sympathetically.... Maybe, the farmer replied. The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. How wonderful, the neighbors exclaimed. Maybe, replied the old man. The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy for what they called his misfortune. Maybe, answered the farmer. The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out. Maybe, said the farmer. There are many ways to interpret this story. The most obvious is that no single event, in and of itself, can be judged as good or bad, right or wrong, lucky or unlucky. We can only get the full perspective after time has passedand even then, it might change again. But another takeaway is the importance of staying present and not getting too carried away by the stories we tell ourselves about what is happening in our lives. It’s an invitation to cultivate detachment and fortitude as a means of experiencing more equanimity in the face of the ever-changing circumstances. This has been a crazy year. With the COVID-19 pandemic, intense social unrest, and most recently, the election, it seems like every day has brought some news that threatens our sense of stability and safety. In a world like this, perhaps we can learn something from the farmer in the Taoist story. We can take steps to center ourselves and stay grounded amid the chaos and tumult that surrounds us. Meditation, time outdoors, and physical activity are my go-to strategies for cultivating this resilience and equanimity." ~ Chris Kresser

Yes, yes, and yes again! Ladies and gents, the more we stop giving energy to things we don't want in our lives, the more energy we have to put towards the many wonderful things we DO want in our lives

Significant experience I had today I'd like to share with you all! Might be a good reminder for those of you dealing with autoimmune management... Some brief background to start - as many of you know, I have autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis that I have been managing overall quite well using nutrition and lifestyle for the past 5 years. I am particularly very strict about keeping certain foods out of my diet because doing that makes everything else about autoimmune manage...ment sooooo much easier for me! Last March I realized that foods I hadn't suspected of hurting me, now were triggering intense immune flares of major nerve pain. Those foods were eggs and coffee. I stopped both and all my body pain receded. It was honestly amazing and liberating! Then in August I made the decision to allow myself a coffee 1-2x/week as a coconut latte because of the results of some extensive testwork. I included this with no mishaps. I did a lot of work beforehand to be able to handle this and it paid off. In October I started switching my coffee choice from a coconut latte (too sweet for me) to an Americano Misto with a splash of coconut milk. I assumed, foolishly, that hearing coconut milk they'd ONLY use coconut milk. But this morning at the cafe - which I still love, by the way - explained that no, they indeed do NOT only use coconut milk but were using dairy milk and then a little coconut milk in the brew. When Lucretia gets those coffees for me occasionally, she said she is strict about ensuring only coconut milk is used - what a gal!!!, but I honestly just assumed the baristas were being strict for me when I placed my orders That'll teach me to pay even more attention! For weeks, I have been wracking my brain wondering what could be triggering my recent obvious autoimmune flare this last month and in a moment of clarity, because I asked the right question this morning, I had the big ah ha! Dairy exposure; consistently enough to cause serious flaring. My immune system is heavily triggered by dairy proteins. MORAL OF MY STORY - even with the best of intentions, stuff happens. I had an initial bout of fear once I learned the truth, had the gal make me an Americano Misto only with coconut milk - which tastes sooooo much better, by the way! - and made a plan on how to help my body get out of this darn flare while I drove the remaining distance to the clinic this morning. Knowing the trigger now makes it so much easier for me to work a good plan I KNOW will work for me. So... quick scare, quick realization and quick development of a good plan of action! That, my friends, is autoimmunity management in reality. I am forever grateful, beyond grateful, for all the knowledge I now have so I can help myself and others with autoimmunity live healthier lives!! Live and learn. Adapt and thrive.

Perhaps "unarguably" one of the most treasured Christmas movies EVER must be The Sound of Music I heard this song "My Favorite Things" sung in another movie last night and immediately felt the message to my core and teared up with happiness. I honestly felt such a sense of RELIEF within moments of hearing the song and I feel compelled to share in case it also may inspire you. The last few days of this already tough year have again brought up some fears and insecurities abo...ut health and wealth and freedom. I have NO intention of letting those fears dominate my life as they will crumble my resilience and I will become very sick - NOT AN OPTION I already have some wonderful "tricks" to snap me out of the doldrums and sadness/fear traps, but have still struggled a bit more than usual for a couple of days now. Until I heard the song!! Then I was overcome with relief and a lovely sense of joy. At bedtime I was feeling overcome with moments of discomfort, then thought of the song lyrics "I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don't feel so bad", and instantly my mind wouldn't share space with thinking about the fearful stuff while I focused on something I adore. I had INSTANT relief with this pivot. GRATITUDE for something I genuinely adore brought the negatively circuit. Then another fearful thought would emerge, and I'd interrupt it again and my breathing started to become much deeper and after a few more times, I ended up falling into a deep sleep! I've been very happy all day today and I believe it was from that cool interrupt.
