A Different Booklist 29.03.2021

Robert Jones, Jr. in conversation with Dr. Lance T. McCready about Jones’ debut novel, The Prophets. The novelist spoke of the Black women authors and singers w...hose work influence him, the seminal role of James Baldwin’s work on his life, his research which took him to pre-colonial Africa to find a spirituality before colonialism, the radical love of Black queer men, a critique of a particular kind of Christianity that demonizes LGBTQ people. The influence of ancestral voices, writing for now though writing about the past. There was so much more. This is just from memory-:) Thanks Penguin Random House Canada, A Different Booklist, Knowledge Bookstore, Munro’s Books, Librarie Racine, and BGMN. Special signed copies are available, while quantities last, at those bookstores.

Quotes spark ideas and inspire, as this one - good advice to follow for a more peaceful future: "If there is anything to learn from the story of our ancestry, it is that you should respect and protect yourself; that you should demand not only justice but joy; that you should see, truly see, the vulnerability and the creativity and the enduring beauty of others."--David Chariandy, in I've Been Meaning to Tell You: A Letter to My Daughter At the end of March, each of three submitters whose #WordsHavePowerADB quotes we draw at random and publish on our website at the end of the month will win an ADB annual membership. That means 10% off purchases for a year (from Apr 2021-Apr 2022) at A Different Booklist. Looking forward to your posts - ReadDifferently!

Today is Pink Shirt Day, a day that celebrates speaking up and interrupting homophobia, toxic masculinity, and gender stereotypes. In 2007, two high school stud...ents observed a fellow student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. These students went out and bought 50 pink tank tops and handed them out to students the next day at school as an action of solidarity with the bullied student. The spirit of Pink Shirt Day is often framed as a day of celebrating kindness and being kind to others, which pinkwashes the real spirit of the day. Pink Shirt Day celebrates speaking out and taking action when you witness injustice. Being kind to others isn’t enough to stop bullying, but taking action to interrupt it when you see it can be. On this Pink Shirt Day, we encourage all families to talk with their children about steps they can take when they witness injustice. Role playing can help kids develop the skills they need to name the injustice, interrupt it, and replace it with justice. Check out our Pink Shirt Day Reading list for books to help scaffold this conversation. Barack Obama's highly anticipated memoir A PROMISED LAND releases today! It has been a feat in book publishing and distribution - no doubt in writing, too - to make it here but 95+ copies have arrived at A Different Booklist. More are on the way. Submit your order online through our website https://www.adifferentbooklist.com/ to secure a copy or pick up and pay for A Promised Land on the spot during business hours (from noon-6 from Mon-Fri, noon-4 on Sat). From Eli Stok...ols's book review of this first volume (of two) of Obama's memoir about his presidency: " 'A Promised Man' often reads like a conversation Obama is having with himself questioning his ambition, wrestling with whether the sacrifices were worth it, toggling between pride in his administration’s accomplishments and self-doubt over whether he did enough. Written in the Trump era, under an administration bent on repudiating everything he stood for, his elegant prose is freighted with uncertainty about the state of our politics, about whether we can ever reach the titular promised land."
