Usually I'm the one writing the story about someone else...but I'm delighted to be in this month's issue of Seaside Magazine, along with many other incredible women in business serving our community. Many thanks to Janis Jean Photography for making the photo shoot so easy and fun! She’s a wonderful photographer. Link to the article is in the comments.

There's a new trend on Facebook and it's driving me crazy! It goes like this: Type a random question on a Facebook background and add a bunch of emojis. ... Post it on your business and personal timelines, AND in your private groups. Yay! Easy daily content, done and DONE! Sound familiar? Every day, my Facebook feed is full of stuff like: You woke up with a million dollars in your bank account. What will you do? Name ONE thing you wish you'd done when you were a teenager! Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Aaaaand, GO! Describe yourself in 3 emojis! Ugh. I don't know who’s teaching entrepreneurs to fill up their content calendar with this nonsense, but it's not a solid content plan! Sure, you might get a lot of comments and likes, and that feels good, doesn't it? But social media popularity doesn't pay the bills. Let's be honest: 297 Facebook comments about what folks would do with a million bucks is just a waste of everyone's time. Especially yours! You have to actually moderate that post and reply to every single comment, or pay someone else to do it! And for what purpose? You're crazy busy and you need a MUCH better strategy for creating daily content that drives $$ to your bottom line! So what's the criteria for great content that IS worth your time? Great content should: Position you as an expert in your field. Provide REAL value, not just time wasting entertainment. Teach, advise, guide or clarify information that helps your clients solve their pain and transform their lives. Build personal, honest, meaningful communication that shows people they can trust you. Drive your business forward with clear Calls to Action, whether that's hopping on a free consultation with you, joining your email list, or checking out your blog, podcast, website, etc. I know those fluffy, bubble gum posts are fun and take ZERO time to slap on your SM feed, but if you take the time to put a solid strategy in place, you'll reap the benefits now and over the long term. Your story is the key to your company's bottom line. Why? * Because nobody can copy your story * Customers like to do business with humans, not brands... * Nothing establishes trust, connection or loyalty like a great story! * We're hard-wired to pay attention to stories and remember details in them * Stories invoke curiosity, making the brain more receptive so our messaging can land * Stories generate emotion, and emotion overrides even our beliefs No matter what stage you're at in your business, your stories make a big impact on your ability to attract clients and win their loyalty. Oh! And one more thing. You don't have to be a modern day Jane Austen to be a powerful storyteller. This trips people up a LOT because we all get wrapped up in worrying too much about the actual mechanics of writing. Please, please, please...Forget perfect grammar and award-winning prose; just be yourself. Relax, and just share who you are. Why you do what you do. Who you help and the impact you have on people's lives. It's all about building trust and connection, human to human. And showing--not telling--your potential clients your unique approach to guiding them towards a better version of themselves. That's the power of story. #thepowerofstory #brandstorycoach #marketingpro

We all know it's super important to develop daily morning habits. There's so much evidence that our morning routines have a big impact on our productivity, success, happiness and overall quality of life. Meditation. Setting intentions. A gratitude journal. Exercise routines. Pretty much any successful person will tell you these types of morning activities are the secret sauce to their achievements.... But what about the way we END each day? I think there's magic in setting a mindful intention to finish each day doing something we love. That way, we drift into sleep full of content, peace and even more passion for our daily pursuits. Also, it's a great way to reward ourselves for everything we accomplished that day. I'm a firm believer that every single day should feel a little bit like a holiday, even when life gets stressful and busy. (Especially when life is stressful and busy!) Work and routine are unavoidable parts of life, but why wait for that once a year vacation, the weekend, or an elusive day off, to really enjoy being alive? Why not pretend you're on holiday each and every evening, and spend just an hour or two doing things you absolutely love? For me, that's swimming in the ocean. Hiking 10K around a local lake. Buying produce at a local farm after a drive around the Peninsuala. Grabbing our favourite snacks from the grocery store and having charcuterie for dinner. Sitting outside on the patio under the solar lights with a fancy cocktail, my kids and the love of my life. I can think of a thousand ways to end my days in bliss, but I love it when my partner says, "I love how I come home from work every day and feel like I'm on vacation." That's my goal: to roll into bed each night feeling like I'm on vacation. On Friday, Ryan and I spent the evening tucked into the corner of an outdoor patio at a local restaurant, with a couple of cold summer cocktails and views of the Sidney waterfront. On Sunday, we ended the day swimming in the ocean, as the tide came in over the hot sand and rocks, warming up the normally icy water to a gloriously refreshing escape from the day's summer heat. I think we'll do the same thing tonight. Sure, we could get lost in dinnertime hustle and chores and routine and wait until the morning to reset ourselves with mediation and a gratitude journal, but I believe there's something truly powerful in ending every day with a little bit of magic. What do you think? Happy storytelling! P.S. Do you have a favourite summer drink? I recently fell in LOOOVE with Fentiman's Rose Lemonade, especially with a generous splash of Empress 1908 Gin (made right here in our little seaside town), a squeeze of fresh lemon and a sprig or two of mint from the garden. I'm telling you, it's summer in a glass!

When it comes to content creation, people often ask me for my best tips to boost creativity and productivity. I always suggest you start with two things: Fresh air and play. This week, after months of global crises, social isolation and working to pivot my business in order to help my clients pivot theirs, I restored my spirit with a short trip to a lakeside cabin in the mountains with my family. I came home full of creative energy. ... In the middle of all the stress and uncertainty, I hope you've taken some time to ease your burdens and just play outside! Because if you're feeling stuck with content creation--if that blank screen and flashing curser have you drawing a mental blank and cursing out loud--fresh air and some outside fun are the best quick fixes I can think of for any sort of writer's block. They're also as vital to your health, your productivity and your creativity as time spent--butt in seat--doing the actual work of your business. I can't stress that enough! I hope you can find a little patch of nature to enjoy and come home feeling taller too.

Last week, I listened to a live town hall discussion hosted by Black business coach, Rachel Rodgers, called Reimagining Small Business: A town hall to listen, learn and commit to building equitable, anti-racist organisations. At the end, I took the pledge to do more than just listen. There are real, measurable actions I can take--things I've already done. Like, for starters, decolonizing my bookshelf, which I did yesterday. I was shocked and ashamed to find only two books by ...authors of colour. Two!! I went straight to the bookstore and changed that. But by talking about my commitments publicly, I not only hold myself accountable, it's also the best way I can use my own platforms to support the Black, Indigenous and People of Colour that I work with, am friends with and network with, both in my business and personal life. I'll be sharing my own steps as I go along. But here's a link to three incredibly helpful resources that I tapped into last week: 1. Here is the Town Hall replay: https://helloseven.co/townhall-2/. Be sure to take and sign the pledge at the end, to hold yourself accountable and take your commitment beyond just words and good intentions. 2. The Allyship Awareness Forum, hosted by Eva Medilek. Sick here to sign up for the replay: https://aw12d394.aweb.page/p/9f72239a-c74f-4fc5-adc9-19cd28 3. Join Eva's Facebook Group, The Intimacy of Race, where the allies of People of Colour can learn and communicate in a safe space dedicated to sharing information with love, not hate, anger or judgement. https://www.facebook.com/groups/theintimacyofrace/about/

I'm thinking about a lot of things right now, but one of them is how much I have to learn. About my own place in the change we all want to see in the world. About the things I can do to educate myself, and where I can use my voice to help bring about change. If I pay attention, there are plenty of voices who are telling me what I need to hear. Every day, I find more voices to listen to. More ways for me to take responsibility for my own education on topics I haven't made enou...gh effort to fully understand. Racism. White Privilege. White Fragility. White Supremacy. Prejudice. Discrimination. Anti-discrimination. Yes, let's use the words. Let's talk about these openly. Let's get to the heart of what the words really mean and how they play out in our lives. For those of us who are white, let's face our ignorance, our blind spots, our reliance on the system that rules in our favour, time and time again. And let's make commitments for change and take a stand for them. Let's be accountable for real, concrete actions that will, slowly but surely, bring about change. We will all navigate this differently. For me, I’m reading. A lot. I’m taking part in a BIPOC Ally bookclub reading "Me and White Supremacy." I’m having conversations with Black colleagues, friends and business contacts about what they’re going through and how I can support. I’m brainstorming ways to use my storytelling powers to amplify their voices. I’m making commitments to build diversity into my own business as it grows. I’m speaking out when I need to. And above all, I’m listening. I know it’s just the start of a more mindful, conscious way of thinking, being and doing. But to myself, to you, and to all BIPOC, I promise to hold true to my commitment to help build and strengthen the bridge between us all.
