Good morning friends! It’s been a bit since I posted a photo of me, and figured I’d keep it light today. I’m Danielle, owner of Advantage Safety Services. I’ve been working in Occupational Health and Safety since 2012. I have worked primarily in the Oil and Gas industry, but do have some experience in other industries as well. I started my career working in Fort St John for a construction company, then made the change to trucking and worked for a local company in Dawson Cre...ek. I went from there to managing the logistics vendors for a large oil and gas producer in the area (honestly such a fun job), then ended up going back to the local trucking company I’d previously worked for while I completed a bit more schooling and got on the way to starting my own company. I have done more schooling than any sane person I’m sure. I started off just doing short courses through our local Northern Lights College, as well as some online learning through CCOHS. I also took my DOT Drug & Alcohol Specimen collector course for the first time in 2013. I took lots of various smaller courses like Safety Program Development, internal COR auditing, and Root Cause Analysis. From there I went to the University of Alberta, I did a year of Human Resources, then went on to complete my OHS Certificate program in 2016. I took more small courses between then and 2019 when I finally started shooting towards going on my own, taking the External COR Auditing course through Energy Safety Canada. During the spring and summer this year I took a Registered Professional Training course, which helped me understand the ins and outs of adult learning, with focus on how to design and teach courses with maximum knowledge retention. Along my whole journey has been my favorite sidekick, Ben! He’s played many roles in my journey, and actually used to come to work with me every single day. Ben loves coming to the office, coming for car rides to site with me, and like the typical Lab, LOVES being outside and playing ball! They haven’t seen their families in months and Christmas won’t look the same for them as it does for a lot of us. Let’s talk COR Audits. As many organizations in the Oil & Gas industry know, a COR Audit is almost always required in order to fulfill contracts and customer needs. As an HSE Professional in the industry, I saw the struggle that companies were having with finding a local external auditor to come perform their audits. We had to fly an auditor in from Kamloops to perform our externals, and once you get the bill for the flights, hotels, meals, car rental, PLUS the audit... you... were looking at a hefty bill. A plus side to the external audit, however, was that fresh set of eyes on our safety program. The auditor would see things that we normally wouldn’t because it was the program we were running and working with every day - and it wasn’t necessarily negatives they found. Sometimes we forget what good work our workers do because we’re so used to seeing it every day. I have been completing audits (internal and external) since 2013, and in 2019 I got my certification with Energy Safety Canada to perform External Audits for companies who hold a COR through their partnership program. Yesterday was an exciting day! I got my grades back from my RPT course and I PASSED!!!! I am officially able to design, license, sell and teach workforce training. I do have a couple of courses in the queue, but am still open for suggestions if anyone has any! I am also working on getting on with one of the biggest training providers in the Oil & Gas industry to be able to provide their courses to our community as well!! I have my classroom space sorted out and am so excited to get this ball rolling!

As I branch into this new division of my company I’m hoping for some input as to what is lacking in our health and safety training department in the area. I’m wondering, are there any courses you’ve tried to get access to and either A) had a significant wait to get into the course, had a hard time finding someone who provided the course, C) didn’t work with your schedule, or... D) you had to leave Dawson Creek all together to take the course? I’m almost ready to launch some workforce training, but first I’d like your input on what you’d like to see. I do have a couple ideas floating in my head, however suggestions are always appreciated. These can be courses already being provided, or ones that you don’t currently feel you have access to.
