*ARTIST SPOTLIGHT* Debbie Miller : I HAVE NO WORDS The #IHAVENOWORDS project was born out of my commitment to be a part of a call to action. I needed to harness and channel the rage, anger, disgust and profound sadness that I was feeling as a result of the unjustified killing of George Floyd on May 25th, 2020 by a Minneapolis police officer.... This collection of emotionally charged conversations allowed me to understand their feelings and capture images of the acute pain, suffering and profound sadness and frustrations that has beset our community. In this tapestry of photographs and community quotes, I tell their stories. This photo-essay offers a view into the impact of inter-generational racism on black families and gives voice to their cry ... I can’t breathe.... It is also a call to have courage; a call to pursue this shared path of resistance; a call to do the hard work to build a more equal, equitable and inclusive society. #artgalleryofmississauga #mississauga #community #bordercrossings #shareyourstory #thebordercrossingsproject #art #theatre #spokenword #writtenword #music #photography #video #beseen #beheard #journey #journeythroughart #embracethejourney #embracediversity #engagecommunity #createconnections #community #connect #ihavenowords

Sharing your border crossing story can be healing and inspiring. It can be shared through art and conversation. Sometimes, the way to make a change is to tell your story so others will ask questions. #artgalleryofmississauga #mississauga #community #bordercrossings #shareyourstory #thebordercrossingsproject #art #theatre #spokenword #writtenword #paint #textile #photography #mixedmedia #watercolour #sculpture #clay #poetry #video #beseen #beheard #journey #makesyou #journeythroughart #embracethejourney #embracediversity #engagecommunity #createconnections #community #connect #storytelling

Join us on November 29th at 2:00pm for a talk with artist Francis Ferdinands. [Register using the link in bio] A Sri Lankan born Canadian visual artist, Frances' exhibition history spans almost 4 decades, includes local/ national/international shows (London, Paris, Bogota, Honolulu and New York). The installation 26 envisions healing through beauty. ... Created in 2015, it consists of 26 pairs of hand-painted (size 7) slippers. Each pair memorializes one year of the recently ended 26 year Sri Lankan civil war (1983-2009) in which 100,000 civilians and over 50,000 military personnel died and many others put into camps, displaced or disappeared. The installation is combined with a beautiful poem by the famous Sri Lankan writer Jean Arasanayagam. She married a Tamil, and so was thrown immediately into the consequences. In The Month of July marks the beginning of the war - July 1983. It is a bookend to the slippers which marks the end. *Artist Spotlight* FRANCES FERDINANDS My intention overall is to create enduring bonds by amalgamating both Western, Middle Eastern and South Asian concepts, belief systems and visual languages. Through this synthesis I try to speak to the in-between space of varied social and cultural realities I inhabit. The resulting works are a reflection of my hybridity as a Sri Lankan-born Canadian in articulating issues as I see it from this unique perspective.... Saturday, November 28 at 1:00 pm Bhavna Bhatnagar, Artist Register using the LINK IN BIO.... -------------- This workshop will teach the basic techniques to engage creativity through the use of clay to make a bowl. The bowls can remain soft and smooth or the participant may want to embellish with texture, engravings, stamp designs, etc. to create a totally unique piece. Borders crossed or in the process of being crossed will be discussed with the assistance of a border crossing team member and infused in the creation making its significance that much greater. Suggestions and instructions on how the final product can be finished, including painting, sealing, etc. will be provided and discussed as this part will have to be done at home once the bowl has completely dried. The final creations will be photographed for archival purposes and we will be encouraging the participants to share a picture of their painted bowls with us. Borders are challenges faced physcially, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. They can both connect and divide, shared by the art of story telling. Recognized and sharing these border crossings allows us to understand ourselves and others differently. Instead of groups of people seperated by arbitrary distinctions, we are all individuals who expereince pivotal moments of change that shape the contours of the narratives of our lives....
