This is the start of the historic Shubenacadie River as it leaves from Grand Lake and flows 72km to the Bay of Fundy. The Mi’kmaq used it as a highway for centuries and called it Segubunakade, later becoming known as Chigabenakady by the Acadians. In 1826 it became part of the 114km Shubenacadie Canal Commission that could accommodate large ships to get supplies across the province.
