NORTHERN ONTARIO WILD RICE IS HERE: Wild rice, traditionally known asmanoominin Ojibwe, has been harvested by Indigenous peoples in what is now Canada for millenia. These annual plants were historically harvested in the cold, pristine shallow watersin the rivers and lakes of the Great Lakes region up to the aquatic areas of the Boreal Forest in Northern Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Traditionally, this crop would have been prepared by stewing the grains with deer b...roth and maple syrup, and then used like a stuffing for wild game. Despite its name, manoomin isn't truly rice at all, but a cereal. This grain's rich, nutty character makes it the perfect pairing with savoury dishes, fresh fish or as an addition for soups and salads. One dollarfrom each bag sold supports Menòbideg, a new social enterprise founded by @eatthebirchbite restaurant in the Algonquin Anishinabeg community of Kitigan Zibi north of Ottawa. They are partnering with community educators to provide young Indigenous people with outdoor science learning opportunities. This land based learning initiative will provide participants with experiential lessons in the outdoor classroom. Rooted in Anishinabe knowledge systems, the Menòbideg classes explore environmental science and earth stewardship from an Indigenous worldview. LEVELING UP: It may not look like much now, but we couldn't be more excited about our new home. Nestled beside@dominioncity on Canotek Road in the city's East End, we're hard at work building out an urban stone mill and sourdough-driven bakery, slated to open in early 2021. We can't wait to get to work sharing freshly milled flour, heritage grain and freshly baked sourdough goods with all of you. As always, sourcing certified organic, Canadian-grown heritage grains will be... at the heart of everything we do. We hope to make Almanac a catalyst and champion for the sort of agriculture that remembers; the kind that leaves more for the land, nourishes the people it feeds and values those who grow it. In other words, flour, grain, bread and more; like you used to get. We'll have plenty to share in the weeks and months ahead. Keep up with our progress by signing up for our newsletter on our website. Stay tuned for new product availability and more. Most of all, thank you for support and faith. We can't wait to get back to serving you soon.

WE'RE LEVELING UP: Over the past few months we’ve experienced more demand than we ever expected, and for that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to meet that demand with our current set up. Accordingly, we’re making some big changes and we’ll have exciting news to share in the days and weeks ahead. In the very short term, we won’t have flour to stock. We’re making moves to make sure we have all the supply and selectio...n you expect from us for the long haul . We’re more committed than ever to ensuring we keep your pantry stocked with premium heritage flour and grains. Sign up for our newsletter to be the first to hear about our plans and upcoming restocks. In the meantime, we’ll be sharing new recipes and sourdough tips over on our Instagram account. We look forward to being able to continue to serve you even better in the future. Yours, Gabrielle Prud’homme Owner, Almanac Grain
