So what do you say during an interview when the employer asks what motivates you? I used to do an exercise with new hires asking what factors motivated them and most people answered money and time off or some type of physical reward. Since today is #BellLetsTalk Day I figured it would be an important time to acknowledge how work search impacts our mental health. We derive a lot of our sense of self from our jobs and careers. Beginning with the journey to start a new job or making a career change causes our sense of self to fluctuate. We are forced to reflect and condense our accomplishments onto a single sheet of paper. Increase our vulnerability while we pitch ourselves to possible employers. We get ou...r hopes up with each application we send out. Then open ourselves up to rejection if it is decided that we are not the right fit. And with most things, finding a job is even more complex and has increased barriers during this pandemic. I want you to know that it is totally and completely valid to feel drained and exhausted if you have been struggling to find work, if you have been struggling in your current job, and if you are just tired of applying to new positions. If you feel hurt from being continuously rejected by companies or hurt from the sheer silence of sending out application after application and hearing nothing. These are all valid, real, and common feelings when looking for work. It is absolutely okay to take breaks from your work search, to seek out support for this complicated process and seek out support for your mental health.
