"CORNWALL, Ontario A Cornwall Police Officer has been demoted for nine months after being caught driving while impaired."
"In 2018, the service decided to try naming those charged, as well. The initiative lasted less than a year: it simply wasn't having an effect on the number of impaired driving charges"
Starting Saturday, Nov. 21, nightly RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot checks will be held throughout the city. Toronto police will also be doing drinking and driving enforcement in all divisions.
As in previous years, you’ll see officers on the streets over the next eight weeks. They’ll be looking for any impaired drivers and setting up RIDE checkpoints on major roads.

"Barrows-Taylors acquittal on the gun charges likely spared him a three-year prison sentence." Justice Lipson came to the right decision, defence lawyer Arvin Ross said. If he had found my client guilty it would have been a miscarriage of justice. The police did not do any follow-up investigation to disprove the alternate defence theory for how the gun ended up in the vehicle, said Ross. Ultimately, this was the flaw in the Crowns case.
Sad news. Mr Hogg was a well known academic and contributing member of our legal community. He will be missed, but the impact he made in Canada's legal system will be a legacy that will live on for generations to come.
"Suris explained that the lack of captions prevented him from appreciating the videos because he could not fully understand the storyline or the dialogue. He couldnt follow the plot of a police interrogation or a disciplinary moment involving a babysitter, according to the court documents obtained by TMZ, said Global News."
"In all, 787 people were given roadside breath tests, down from 875 in the previous year. Within seven weeks of R.I.D.E. checks, 104 people were charged with impaired driving offences, compared to 117 in 2018." Have you ever had to give a roadside breath test? Do you have questions about whether you can refuse? Leave your question in the comments and I'll give you answers!

This was a civil case with some quasi criminal issues as well.
In Quebec "Beginning today, people found guilty of a second offence will only be allowed to drive vehicles equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock device for the rest of their lives."
"In the city, Toronto police will also be targeting impaired, distracted, and aggressive drivers, as well as those not wearing seatbelts."
Today we were able to save a young man from getting a criminal record (DUI) even though he was not driving a vehicle. Yes...you can be charged with a DUI even if you're not driving and it'll take a trial to prove your innocence! Check out my video on the topic.

This seems to be happening often. If trained police officers have trouble staying under the legal alcohol limit, how can un-trained civilians be expected to? Is it time for a Zero Tolerance approach?
"On Thursday, in a courtroom in Oshawa, Ont., Sillars became the first Canadian to be convicted of impaired driving charges for the act of paddling a canoe."
"When the young womans mother arrived at the police station to retrieve her daughter about 1 a.m. Sunday, police noted she too seemed under the influence of alcohol. The mother failed a breathalyzer and was also arrested for impaired driving." ....the things we do for our children....

This is a big step forward that will help increase the representativeness of our juries
"A woman involved in a deadly head-on crash is off the hook on drunk-driving charges because a police officer asked a hospital nurse for the results her urine test and then obtained a search warrant to seize her samples, Ontarios top court ruled on Wednesday. In upholding the acquittal, the Court of Appeal ruled the breach of her constitutional rights outweighed the publics interest in seeing her tried for a serious crash."

"Be honest. RIDE programs are often in full swing later in the evening. If I had a glass of wine with dinner four hours prior, Im not impaired. You might be everyone is different but theyre looking for impairment. Most people are terrible liars. Find the lie, find the impaired." I can't say that I agree with this point. As the law stands right now, if you admit to any consumption of alcohol the police WILL administer the roadside test which could lead to them arresting you for excess blood alcohol, even if you're not impaired. The law will soon change to give police the power to demand roadside tests at their will, but for now, they need an admission of consumption or the odour of alcohol to justify a breath demand. Insist on speaking with Arvin Ross if you are detained by the police! (416) 560-9366
