PENTECOST AND RETURN TO ORDINARY TIME Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Our Lady and the apostles after the Ascension of Jesus Christ. It is the power of the Holy Spirit that enabled the apostles to leave their hiding place and proclaim boldly the good news, building the new Church of Jesus Christ. Let us call upon the Holy Spirit: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth. The Easter season concludes with Pentecost Sunday. We now return to Ordinary Time that extends until Christ the King at the end of the church year in November.

Pentecost Sunday Sunday, May 20, 2018 Lord, send forth your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Jesus promised his disciples that he would send an Advocate that would guide them to the truth when they were ready for it. The Acts of the Apostles dramatically describes the descent of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost as a violent wind that filled the house, and as tongues of fire that rested on the apostles giving them the ability to speak new languages in orde...r to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. The apostles were transformed by the Holy Spirit. In the second reading from Galatians, St. Paul urges us to live by the Spirit, that is to put on a higher mind, and strive with God's grace to be what God wants us to be. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are gifts bestowed upon those who endeavor to live by the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. This does not mean that we will be spared from suffering, but that with the strength and direction of the Holy Spirit, we will be able to withstand any calamity. The Holy Spirit is powerful and unpredictable, bringing new life whether we want it or not. In this time of transition, let us be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, our families and our parish community. Come Holy Spirit. Mass Intentions - Assumption Parish Sat.
