Tuesday Night Talks (TNT): Season 2 continues February 16 at 8pm with artist Erin Shirreff. Register now at audainartmuseum.com/tnt. TNT Season 2 is sponsored by HSBC. Hosted by the Museum’s Director & Chief Curator, Dr. Curtis Collins, this seventh Episode features Erin Shirreff, an artist who was born in Kelowna and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria followed by a Master of Fine Arts at the Yale University School of Art in Connecticut. Shirre...ff, now based in Montreal, will be discussing her 2019 work in the AAM’s holding entitled ‘Fig.14’. This archival pigment print is indicative of how the artist’s practice strikes a curious balance between photography, sculpture and video, as she explores how viewers negotiate three dimensional forms in an era dominated by the constant exchange of static and moving digital images. Over the past decade, Shirreff’s work has been presented at prominent venues throughout North America and Europe with solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland, and Vancouver’s Contemporary Art Gallery. Among the notable public collections that feature her art are the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. #audainartmuseum #audainTNT #onlyinwhistler #explorebc

Tuesday Night Talks (TNT): Season 2 continues February 9 at 8pm with artist Attila Richard Lukacs. Register now at audainartmuseum.com/tnt. TNT Season 2 is sponsored by HSBC. Hosted by the Museum’s Director & Chief Curator, Dr. Curtis Collins, this sixth Episode features Attila Richard Lukacs, a Vancouver-based painter and graduate of Emily Carr University of Art + Design, who moved to Berlin in the late 1980s. By the early 1990s Lukacs had gained an international following f...or his renderings of German skinhead culture within a variety of unabashed homo-erotic contexts. The 1991 work in the AAM’s holding entitled ‘Painting the Lovers’ Portrait’ is from the series ‘Love in Loss’ and it exemplifies this artist’s classically inspired treatment of the male figure, while referencing Hungarian folk art as a nod to his Eastern European ancestry. The artist returned to Vancouver in the early 2000s and his recent large-scale paintings feature dreamscapes as well as a rethinking of popular Christian imagery including the war in heaven from the Book of Revelation. #audainartmuseum #audainTNT #onlyinwhistler #explorebc

Tuesday Night Talks (TNT): Season 2 continues February 2 at 8pm with carver Dempsey Bob. Register now at audainartmuseum.com/tnt. TNT Season 2 is sponsored by HSBC. Hosted by the Museum’s Director & Chief Curator, Dr. Curtis Collins, this fifth Episode features Dempsey Bob, a Terrace-based artist who has been among the leading Indigenous carvers in British Columbia for over forty years. Bob’s Tahltan-Tlingit ancestry is the central inspiration for his art, as evident in ‘Nor...thern Eagles Transformation Mask’ of 2011. This brilliant work in the AAM’s holding captures the supernatural moment when human and animal forms coalesce according to legendary tales. The oversized yellow cedar mask is also testament to Bob’s incredible ability to manipulate wood in a highly plastic manner and underscores the artist’s signature torqueing of the form via simultaneous frontal and side views. #audainartmuseum #audainTNT #onlyinwhistler #explorebc #dempseybob #carver

Tuesday Night Talks (TNT): Season 2 continues January 26 at 8pm with Christos Dikeakos. Register now at audainartmuseum.com/tnt. TNT Season 2 is sponsored by HSBC. Hosted by the Museum’s Director & Chief Curator, Dr. Curtis Collins, this fourth Episode features Christos Dikeakos, a critical artist on the Vancouver scene for over fifty years. His photographs have been exhibited at venues across Canada and are featured in numerous public collections including the National Galle...ry of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery and UBC’s Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery. Dikeakos will be discussing two key works in the AAM’s holding, ‘Folded Cardboard’ and ‘250 Northern Street’. Both images offer banal street scenes that upon closer inspection reveal individuals that exist on the margins of society. Such a homeless underclass in the core of cities throughout North America is often invisible to greater initiatives of urban renewal and gentrification. This tacit resistance is central to how the artist captures the human reality of lost urban spaces. Photo by James O’Mara #audainartmuseum #audainTNT #onlyinwhistler #explorebc

Tuesday Night Talks (TNT): Season 2 continues January 19 at 8pm with Angela Grossmann. Register now at audainartmuseum.com/tnt. TNT Season 2 is sponsored by HSBC. Hosted by the Museum’s Director & Chief Curator, Dr. Curtis Collins, this third Episode in Season 2 features Angela Grossmann, a key artist in the noteworthy ‘Young Romantics’ exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1983 at the outset of her career. Since that time Grossmann has become internationally known for h...er deftly composed collages and drawings, while serving as an inspirational teacher to countless emerging artists at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She will be discussing ‘Musical Notes’, a 2007 oil and mixed media on vintage music paper. This work, which features the image of a teenaged woman superimposed over clefs on staff lines with the accompanying lyrics Who moans for me?", is part of a larger focus for Grossmann over the past twenty years on female coming-of-age themes. #audainartmuseum #audainTNT #onlyinwhistler

RESERVOIR by Rebecca Belmore, the Museum’s newest Special Exhibition, will open to the public on November 26. The original opening date was postponed in light of the new provincial health order. Over the past 30 years, Rebecca Belmore has developed a highly charged aesthetic rooted in socio-political commentary that hinges upon her Anishnabai ancestry. As an internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist, from the Lac Seul First Nation in Northwestern Ontario, she has bee...n featured at contemporary art fairs from Havana to Athens. Currently, the Museum is in the process of rescheduling Belmore's evening performance for the Audain Art Museum’s meadow and she is completing two major installations in the Tom & Teresa Gautreau Galleries. These new works will examine the disparity between wealth and poverty in Canada with poignant references to Vancouver, Whistler and the Sea to Sky corridor. RESERVOIR by Rebecca Belmore also includes the North American premiere of ‘Body of Water’, an overturned tarped canoe rendered in aluminum that was commissioned for the 2019 Istanbul Biennial. The exhibition was made possible by Major Sponsor: Dentons, Government Partner: Canada Council for the Arts, and Hotel Partner: Fairmont Chateau Whistler.
