Today in vinyl history. REO Speedwagon. Hi Infidelity. The ninth studio album and best seller for this band. REO was known as a more bluesy rock band to this point... but changed directions in writing and sound with this release. Power Pop may describe this album, however whatever label it has, it worked. Becoming the best selling rock album by 1981 with over five top charting singles, Hi Infidelity put this band, who had been around since 1971 finally at the top of the charts and if the early 80's has a sound, then this album was it. Combining catchy melodies with just enough guitar riffing, this album had everything necessary to stand beside top dogs like; Foreigner, Toto and Journey. "Don't Let Him Go", "Keep On Loving You" "Take It on the Run" and "In Your Letter" all charted in the top 20 with the album at no.1 See more

Today in vinyl history. Sly And The Family Stone. There's A Riot Goin' On. The fifth studio album that became somewhat of a 'solo' project instead of a group effort. By this point with the band, tensions and solitude enveloped between Sly and his bandmates which greatly... effected the creative process with this album. Sly, involved with substances and dealing with some mental issues, became anti-social and withdrawn from all but was driven to write. Being greatly influenced by Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" release and the message he had stated with that album, Sly dove into dark and somber social issues of the time. Any fan of this band would have been startled by the albums makeup as it was nothing like all its' previous upbeat releases. Sly recorded musical parts alone in the studio and much of the vocals with a portable recorder in his bed. Obscure behavior to say the least which had his band confused and disturbed. "Family Affair" charted no.1 with "Runnin' Away" at no.23. This album displayed Sly at his best and worst as an artist and person. The album is highly regarded for it's writing and arrangements but this took a while to be accepted and appreciated as it was a complete opposite Sly And The Family Stone styled work.
