I remember the excitement of digging through the box trying to find 4 angels (now 2) and the sequin covered ball. Then scouting out the perfect placement on the tree - it was magical. ... This is the story about the OG of photo ornament in our family. Mabel Nayler and daughter Ruth Hulsman hand made decorations for a church bizarre back in the 70’s & 80’s. They were Mother and Grandmother of my Uncle Peter. These ornate heirlooms soon came to adorn the trees of many family members, and still do to this day. And so lives the memory of Mabel and Ruth in Christmas tradition each year. The story doesn’t end here... 1992 - My boyfriend’s mother wanted a picture of us in front of the Christmas tree. I was terrified to go near it because it was completely lit with real candles. As I inched closer a familiar ornament caught my eye. There nestled on a branch, was one of the Nayler/Hulsman photo ornaments featuring a pic of my boyfriend. How could this be? In my mind they only existed in our family. I asked where it came from and his mother said a patient of her husband’s gave it to them. Sure enough it was later confirmed to be made by Peter’s mother, Ruth. 2014 - One day I found some old family photos. In that moment I remembered my favourite ornaments from childhood; the photo ornament came to mind. Years of tradition, the connection to a high school sweetheart and the magic of it’s story sparked an idea. I made digital files of photos, sewed up samples and voila the Bee’s Nest photo ornament was born. Every time you send me photo to make an ornament, I think of your story and the memory each photo holds for you. My hope and intention is that one day, you will see a Bee’s Nest ornament on someone’s tree and say, I have one like this too.
