Oceanic whitetip shark at Cat Island in the Bahamas. The reason Cat Island has this species while other well known Bahamian shark diving islands do not, is the incredible depth. A few hundred meters from shore, the ocean plummets into the abyss, thousands of meters below. Oceanics are blue water hunters that spend most of their time near the surface of the deep blue desert far from shore. That is what they are used to, so they get claustrophobic when stuck between the surface and a shallow reef. At Cat Island that isn't an issue. They can be close to shore and swimming in bottomless water at the same time. :) Join us there next April: https://bigfishexpeditions.com//s/oceanic-whitetip-sharks/

An enormous bull sperm whale emerging from the mist in La Paz Bay, Baja. Funny story: we were out in the chase boat looking for whale sharks. The spotter plane thought it was a rather large one and radioed to the skipper who told me which way I should swim. A minute later I found myself nose-to-nose with this behemoth. The whale started echo locating at me; I guess to figure out what I was. It felt like someone was hitting an anvil with a hammer inside my body. Crazy feeling! After maybe a minute, the whale rolls to one side and slowly swims off. Epic :)
