Everyone knows our amazing pharmacist Patrick! He has written this letter to the Ayr news hoping they will print it. It's a long read but please take the time a...nd show him and all of us small business owners that we have your support! Thanks! Hello folks (Ayr News). When you get a chance can you put this in the letter to the editor section, please. Thank you Time for another tea party? My Knowledge of history is a little murky but I do remember the story of the Boston Tea Party. The line that came up of that debacle was taxation without representation. People were fed up with paying taxes with little return. I think it may be time to relive that moment. I’m going to use a baseball euphemism since many are missing the game given the present situation. Business owners in downtown Ayr have been struggling mightily to survive and there appears to be no help from our elected officials. Follow along and see if you agree. I know the owners do! 1. We’ve been told that the downtown ‘is not a priority’. This is from a member of Township indicating the general consensus on the downtown of the sitting council. They want to push development to the 401 corridor. The problem is, whomever develops there would have to pay for water/sewer which could add millions to any construction. It would be difficult for anyone to walk there so accessibility would be limited. (Strike 1 for the council) 2. Garbage pick up is on Monday morning. Most businesses are closed Sunday, many Monday and yet some brain surgeon thought it a good idea to pick up garbage Monday morning. If you put it out Saturday night, you will be fined. Garbage must go out after 5pm Sunday. This means owners must get their garbage to the curb on a day they are closed! I was told by the Region they could accommodate us by picking up the garbage after 9am Monday. Two weeks ago they picked it up at 8:20 am and 7:35 am the week before that. When I asked Township for help I was told it was a Regional issue. They said I would have a better chance at swaying them then they would. Basically, a small independent business in downtown Ayr would have more clout than duly elected officials representing 10,000+ people. Really? Do they actually believe that or are they just being lazy? (Strike 2) 3. A different brain surgeon, I presume, suggested the construction (destruction?) of the Swan/Stanley/Northumberland St corridor over 2 years instead of one fell swoop. Of course this was moved to 3 years. Throw in Covid and I’m surprised there are any businesses in downtown Ayr. Apparently businesses were asked their preference for the construction dates but I couldn’t find one who was asked. (Strike 3) 4. Many years ago (4) I asked council to look into a bussing service to get people around town. A service running twice a week, possibly, tying in the businesses at the north end of town with the south. A route that included Kirkwood, the library, etc., so seniors could get their groceries or have the opportunity to enjoy what little we have. Apparently North Dumfries has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Region in support of a transportation system such as this. I was then told we don’t qualify for funding. Why do we pay if we get nothing in return? Still no plan in place. The township seems to move at the speed of a herd of rampaging turtles. (Actually a herd of turtles is a bale, dole or nest but herd has a better feel to it) (Strike 4....I know, I know) 5. Township was in talks with us to purchase the Swan parking lot for downtown businesses. This was going to be wrapped up by the first quarter (March/20) so everyone could use it. We have heard there is dissension in the ranks. Some councillors don’t want to spend the money in downtown Ayr. Another suggested we donate the land to them. You first, councillor! (Strike 5) 6. I offered to purchase a fountain for the pond downtown almost 4 years ago. It would be set up by a plumber and electrician both offering their services free if not at a reduced cost. I was told one councillor asked if I was going to name it after myself. I sent a response to said councillor. I’m sure if you ask nicely they would provide a copy. It was cathartic to write! The herding turtles strike again! (Strike 6) 7. The topic of putting up Christmas lights in downtown Ayr was broached. Nope! The lights are seasonal only. Why spend the money? I guess Paris, Toronto, and pretty much everywhere else have it wrong! Who celebrates Christmas anyway? (Strike 7) 8. We requested a permit to replace an existing structure in downtown Ayr. We were told it would not take long. After all was said and done, it took 6 months to get it. It was prolonged because the permit got stuck in my server so we didn’t get approval until April 6th. Unfortunately, the premier halted all construction because of Covid so that little oops added 2 more weeks to the wait time. We are bringing a new business to town and this was their response! (Strike 8) So, in baseball lingo, the Township has 2 out, 2 strikes and no balls. I can’t wait to see what they don’t do next. I believe any successful town has a successful core. Everything we’ve done over the last 25 years was for that purpose. Ayr could be a destination given our proximity to the Nith River. We have a river? One would not know we did but it does flood every once in a while so that gives it away. I’m told there’s a plan but with the speed of the herding turtles, I may never see it! It’s too bad. Maybe it’s time for a chat over tea? I would say more but I really must go back to work to put out the garbage! After rereading what I read, it could be that Township just doesn’t like me. Understandable, I don’t like myself sometime. This is no reason to apparently ignore the businesses that pay their salaries. Thank you. P MacNeil
