We're happy to announce a new fibre we're carrying: a brown Finnish Top, a short-tailed breed from Finland also known as "Finn," "Finnish Landrace," or "Finnsheep." http://stores.birkelandwool.com/search.php We added this product because we were looking for a substitute 'moorit' (reddish mid-brown) fibre, given that the pandemic has made sourcing Shetland more difficult... but wow, colour us pleasantly surprised. The brown Finnish is more than just eye pleasing: it is a soft, high lustre fibre with a moderate crimp that gives it nice body and drape, similar in appearance to Blue Faced Leicester. At 28-30 thick and a 80-120 mm staple, Finnish is great for both spinning and felting. Perfect natural tone if you're needle felting some reindeer in time for Christmas!

If dyeing your own fibre is your thing, then this new 70% Kid Mohair, 30% Silk lace weight yarn is going to jump off the shelf into your hands. Actually, who am I kidding... this is luxurious stuff even undyed, and should find it's way into many beautiful scarves and shawls as is!

We're loving the "Alegria Grande" yarns, and have added a couple new colour ways that have been added to our website: Middle Ages, and Orla. Made by Manos Del Uruguay (hands of Uruguay), a non-profit organization that assembles women in to cooperatives throughout the countryside of Uruguay to bring them economic and social opportunities. https://stores.birkelandwool.com/search.php

On this, the anniversary of the Berlin wall coming down, I thought it would be interesting to share this Australian wool grower's perspective of "Checkpoint Charlie" in the Berlin Wall; among other things was the portal for wool trade between East and West Germany during the Cold War. The British secret service agent gunned down at Checkpoint Charlie during the opening scenes of the 1965 film "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" probably should have tried a daylight crossing with fleece samples.

A splash of colour for a grey day! As with most things, COVID is slowing down international shipping but we finally have 100% wool De Witte Engel TrueFelt sheets back in stock.
