Just finished this 1947 King Zephyr tenor that I bought from a client. It is really in incredible condition. Gotta love the aged look of the lacquer. Gave it a complete mechanical overhaul with new pads, seamless domed metal resonators and synthetic felt / tech cork throughout. I truly can’t believe how well it turned out. The keywork is tight, light and FAST. Oh, and that sound!! OMG!! The low end is probably the most powerful of any horn I have ever played. Shout out to ...Don for selling it to me. Thanks!! Turn the sound on!! We made the trip up to Jasper and mostly got lucky with the weather. Decided to do the Edith Cavell trail and the views are SPECTACULAR, even though it was raining/snowing the entire time. There were avalanches across the valley the entire hike. The video is one of the better ones. The sound doesn’t do it justice, but I gives you an idea. At times it sounded like a jet going over head. A nice silver plated YAS-62 in for a tweek. All it needed was to have the G sharp adjustment screw backed out and the lower stack tweaked. Yet the owner had been playing it for three years, all the while wondering why the low notes would not play well. Don’t be afraid to come and chat with your local tech. The client loved this so much I thought I should post it. The paper clip contra I was working on had a missing key guard for the low D#/G#. It was causing a problem because the key was constantly getting bumped out of position. I got the idea that I may be able to use the alt F# guard from a Buescher sax. So I pulled one off of an old C-melody and it worked out really well. I get to work on this beast this week. It’s an early LeBlanc model 350 contra-alto clarinet from the 1950’s. silver plated with a gold washed bell. I won’t be polishing this one, but it does need a complete adjustment on most of the horn. Never seen one of these and the key system looks complicated. This is what I live for.
