The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Dr Michael Mills Good day! (each and every day is a great day if we are fortunate to wake up!)... We will continue our exploration of a framework to allow us to strive for better health. Last week we talked about the first of Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits and applied it to health. The first habit is to: 1. Be Proactive Take Initiative Take Responsibility Be inside-out Make Commitments and complete them. (please see last week’s blog for an elaboration of these concepts) The second habit is to: 2. Begin With the End in Mind - visualize the outcome to enable us to write the program or map Find a health destination of our own. An example of a personal destination is a desire to live a life with physical and mental strength, minimal preventable illness, and longevity. Of course, your destination will differ. You must aim for a destination even if you do not yet know the route! What do you want to accomplish? Even though we don’t normally think of our health as a project it is a life project of tremendous importance. Each Day should contribute to our goal. Do what is needed to accomplish our goal and do not violate our principles to reach it. Always monitor changes in ourself and the world around us. Do not be afraid of re-scripting or changing the path to the destination. Be aware of the special higher order thinking of humans that allows us to achieve a goal such as optimized health: Selfawareness of who we are and what we can do Imagination/potential to strive to meet an objective Conscience use of our talents within the parameters of our principles or fundamental truths What steps must each of us take on the journey to our destination? Develop a Personal Mission Statement that prioritizes optimal Health as a Value. Recognize that we can Influence our Health Outcomes our personal Health is within our Circle of Influence. Examples of areas within our Circle include: dietary choices/weight, physical exercise, stress management techniques. Next Week: Setting priorities Put First Things First Creating great outcomes that improve the life of all parties Think Win-Win Take care, Michael Mills Drmichaelmills.com Blufolio.com

I would like to set up a framework for attempting to improve our health in a systematic manner. We are bombarded with health information through e-mail, the internet and even print!! It is difficult to know where to start our journey to better health. By using a structured approach, we will be more likely to achieve success, grow in knowledge and develop better health habits. I am a big believer in the work of Stephen R. Covey; I will attempt to apply some of his teachings a...bout effectiveness to our goal of a better life with better health. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Dr. Covey, he wrote a book entitled, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He outlines a framework to optimize the effectiveness of individuals and organizations. Read Dr. Covey’s works you will learn as I did and develop a plan to be more effective throughout life. One of the first concepts that we need to incorporate is an inside-out approach to wellness. We need to look at ourselves, critically evaluate where we stand using metrics of health and aim to optimize who we can be. As we work on ourselves, we will stimulate those around us to join in our quest for better health. Be Proactive Take Initiative by recognizing our responsibility to act, we can chart a course to better health. No one is going to change us, but we can change ourselves. Take Responsibility we have choices in our actions: what we eat, what we do, etc. By taking action and not being passive, we can aim for a goal and not attribute our outcomes to others. Be inside-out Realize that we are the one who can make changes, both smaller and larger, to reach a goal of better health and wellness Make Commitments (and complete them!) reaching any goal requires desire, action and completion in order to be successful. Make smaller goals, reach those goals and work towards further goals. By building upon smaller, completed projects, we can enhance our self-confidence to reach greater heights and aim for further growth (similar to building a home on a solid foundation!) I will end this week’s blog with an inspirational saying that was transmitted to me as a child Every day, we are fortunate to have an opportunity to make the World a better place in a small (or larger!) way. So let’s do it!! Have a great week! Michael Mills Blufolio.com, Drmichaelmills.com Live life with an attitude of gratitude. We should aim to be thankful every day. Take Care Michael Mills
