Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay #Accept #Love #Support #Listen... #DontJudge #FeelTheFeels During these unprecedented times filled with uncertainty and things out of our control, many people are experiencing mental health challenges for the first time. At Boomerang Health, we are proud to offer a variety of services that support individuals living with mental health issues. Our door and hearts are always open. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthDay See more
Our SLP team is working hard to make therapy fun, while keeping kids (and clinicians) safe and healthy. Here you can see one of our SLPs working on greetings with a client. In this activity, each friend is greeted as they enter the house. The client is given multiple opportunities to practice using common greetings like Hi!, How are you?, Let’s go play!. The clear plexiglas barrier serves double duty. It provides an extra level of protection, but also visually separates the inside and outside areas of the house. We love finding creative ways to help our clients progress during these new and challenging times!
This free workshop for caregivers and teachers is taking place tomorrow. Learn about resiliency as everyone continues to cope one month into the school year!
#HappyTeachersDay! Teachers have the remarkable privilege of being able to shape young minds. They are selfless, creative, and caring. This year more than ever they deserve the utmost praise and recognition. Teachers are front line workers during this pandemic who are sacrificing so much to educate and provide a positive school experience for children. At Boomerang Health, we are so lucky to collaborate with teachers all the time, and learn so much from them. THANK YOU for all that you do!
OT fun and #OTMonth started off right! Making use of our safety measures by doubling the plexiglass divider as a writing surface. This little guy loved playing tic-tac-toe using the letters he’s learning to print, and the vertical surface acted as an added bonus to optimize wrist positioning.
We are excited to be offering some of our most popular groups virtually this fall! Our conversation clubs are running, with participants ranging in age from middle to high school (multiple groups). Social Butterflies and Social Skills & Self-Regulation will be caregiver groups, facilitated by speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists. Caregivers will learn the curriculum, and at-home activities and strategies will be shared. Contact us to register. Limited spaces are available!
Back to school looks different for many this year, but that doesn't mean that it can't still be a special and memorable time for children! Dr. Susan Lambert highlights some tips from Children's Mental Health Ontario's "Back-to-School Mental Health Kit", and shares how these tools can be applied to everyone. Wishing you all a successful transition! http://www.boomeranghealth.com/back-to-school-and-mental-h/
One of our many superheroes, Julie Navarro-Manning, was nominated, and then selected, to have her name printed on a Thank You cup. Julie is our Medical Care Coordinator and has been working tirelessly throughout this whole pandemic. We have her to thank for keeping our medical team fully operational, scheduling both virtual and in-person visits for 11 physicians. We are so incredibly proud, and lucky to have her as part of our family!
Do you miss seeing our smiling faces? Are you a new client who has never seen what we look like? We are SO excited to now have buttons with pictures of us on them, which every member of our team will have on while at the clinic. Masks are necessary to help stop the spread of COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still catch a glimpse of us. #WearAMask #COVID-19
Looking for an exciting and active way to end the summer? Our Find your Fit group, facilitated by a Registered Physiotherapist, is a fun fitness program designed for adolescents who want to be more physically active, but are not sure where or how to start. It will take place outdoors and physical distancing will be maintained. A separate 30-minute pre-assessment will be conducted in order to establish fitness level and goals. Contact us to learn more or register!
We’re excited to be teaming up with Vaughan Public Libraries and offering this free virtual workshop for parents and caregivers. You’ll hear from our OT, PT, and SLP team leads, and can expect to learn about milestones across a variety of developmental areas, including communication, social skills, fine motor, and gross motor. Common caregiver concerns (i.e. handwriting, dressing after toileting, making friends, and playing at recess) will be discussed. A question and answer period will be provided. Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn some great tips to prepare for back to school! Visit the eventbrite link to register. https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/school-readiness-milestones-in-
At Boomerang Health, we have been thinking a lot and discussing what we can do as an organization to dismantle racism and make meaningful and practical changes for ourselves, our patients and families, and our community as a whole. We wanted to highlight an important conversation that is being had in the US regarding race and ADHD. Check out this the article from our friends at the Child Mind Institute.
COVID-19 has impacted everyone in one way or another, but has posed unique challenges for children with special needs and their parents/caregivers. Issues surrounding socialization, sleep patterns, and eating habits, to name a few, are exasperated in many kids. We are here to support and continue to offer virtual and some in-clinic care across all disciplines.
Talking to children about the COVID-19 pandemic can be difficult, especially those with neurodevelopmental disorders or cognitive challenges. Thanks to AboutKidsHealth for putting together this great resource!
