TWO DAYS left to place an order!

BSCJ Youth Committee 09.11.2020

This weekend would’ve been festas da Nossa Senhora da Luz as well as the labour day parade. Looking back at these pictures from one year ago, it is crazy to say we never knew what 2020 would bring. It will be 6 months since the last band practice we have had but we are hoping we will be able to join together soon and allow the joy of music to make us stronger than ever.

Music is a huge part of a musician's life. These photos are a true representation of how music makes us feel connected with our culture. It's a feeling like no ...other and we were so honoured to take part in this special project that will go down in history. We miss those late evening practices well spent with friends while having a drink or two.The smell of popcorn and chesnuts at the "festa". All this seems like a blur, a distant memory. Yet, our love and passion for music gives us hope that we will soon return to our beloved banda. It was a shock to us all when our regular practices and events all came to a stop. It was like time stood still, wondering when we would be returning and seeing our band family again. For the first time in our lives, we musicians are experiencing a phenominal event like no other before. This is something no band has ever experienced. As this pandemic evolves, we wait patiently and wonder what the future holds. So what is it like to be a musician undergoing these trying times? Well, the talented long time photographer and friend of BSCJ, George Pimentel took it upon himself to document these unusual events through the eyes of some our musicians. George sets the tone of his vision by collaborating music with religion. Afterall, these were his fond memories as a child, while growing up in a typical Portuguese household. The opportunity to document and share a piece of history, combined with an enriched heritage from his upbrings, couldn't have happened at a better time. It is our pleasure to share with you his series on Covid-19 with Banda Do Sagrado Coração De Jesus of Toronto. Thank you George! Enjoy everyone :)

Thank you to our friend George Pimentel for including us in his photo essay on COVID-19 Toronto. This project shows how COVID-19 is impacting our community. We would also like to thank our musicians who participated in this great opportunity. We will get through this together

For many Portuguese Canadians, church is at the core of their community. Today, we are recognizing Portuguese churches and their religious festivals as part of ...#PortugueseHeritageMonth. There are many Portuguese churches in Toronto and across the GTA. Some of the most well known include St. Agnes' Parish that has organized the Nosso Senhor Da Pedra procession and festival for more than 50 years, and St. Mary’s Parish on Bathurst St. that has been running Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres since 1966. This procession is among the largest Portuguese festivals in Canada, drawing people from across the country. In May 1974, it attracted about 90,000 people. Brass bands like the Banda Do Sagrado Coração De Jesus - Toronto at St. Helen’s Parish are part of the rich history of Toronto’s Portuguese community. Since 1978 the band has performed in numerous Portuguese religious events. They performed on Canada Day in Ottawa in 1983 under the first PM Trudeau. Along with the other wonderful church bands in our city, they are an important part of Portuguese culture and traditions. Helder Correia Pitty Domingos Miguel Domingos
