Cafe l'Acadie 27.02.2021

The Acadian villages of Chéticamp, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine and Magré celebrates its annual festival of the Mi-Carême which is one of the longest running festivals in the world. The Origins of the Mi-Carême, an Acadian festival that was brought across the Atlantic to Nova Scotia with the first French settlers, has been celebrated in many European communities since the Middle Ages. The essence of the carnival-like Mi-Carême is a spirit of joy, laughter and mockery that contras...ts with the Lenten period of austerity, severity and penance leading up to Easter. Lent begins the day after Ash Wednesday and ends the day before Easter. Mi-Carême literally means the middle of Lent. There are also three communities in the province of Quebec that still celebrate the Mi-Carême: Fatima in the region of Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Îsle-aux-Grues in the region of Chaudière-Appalaches and Natashquan in the region of Côte-Nord. Examples of festivals with similar characteristics exist in other areas of Canada and the world: Mummering in the province of Newfoundland-and-Labrabor, Mardi-Gras in Louisiana, as well as in the Carribean and in Brazil, Carnival in Quebec City and in many communities in Europe. These festivities evoke the same kind of sentiments and common components to the Mi-Carême; food, beverages, music, dance, laughter and, of course ... masks. In European archives, I was able to find and share some early posters of Mi-Carême Operas and drawings and some early 1900's pictures of the festival in Cape Breton to Cafe l'Acadie's Mi-Carême in 2015. Mi-Carême ends of March 14th. Bonne fête à tous les Mi-Carêmes

Shirley Jackson and her son Jef Wirchenko gave us a Remembrance Day Concert at Cafe l'Acadie. With a wonderful balance of some old war songs and songs written by Shirley from her albums that gained her 4 nominations for ECMA's and 2 Maple Blues Awards, it was the perfect atmosphere for a day of remembrance. Had a few people share with the house some family veteran stories. Thank you Linda and thank you David for sharing memories of your dad veteran Frank Deveau CWO (RTD), ...MMM, CD2 who passed away less then a month ago. Frank and his wife Jeanine and family are long time friends of the Cafe. We were blessed to have you all with us as well as other veterans. Thank you for the sacrifices you and your families have made to serve. I feel that collective and safely, we paid tribute to the spirt of the day ... those who serve, those who have served and the fallen. Thank you Christine Ogden sharing your pictures and video with us. See more
