Putting together hampers for our clients happens in two stages, volunteers pre-build the non-perishables portion of the hampers (pasta, canned goods, etc) and on the day clients collect their food, volunteers add the perishable goods (veggies, fruit, meat, dairy etc) to their hamper. #VolunteerYYC
Potatoes are a staple in our hampers. We wouldn’t be able to provide our clients with scrumptious spuds without the donations of local farmers. Last year Thomas Fresh, Bassano Growers and Kampers Farm Fresh collectively donated almost 778,000 pounds of potatoes. Thank you for helping to feed YYC!
As spring fundraising is sprouting up, we thought we would take this opportunity to share our giving at the til, myth busting blog. Curious if we receive all the donated money? Want to know if the stores are receiving a tax break? How does matching donations work? We answer these questions and more in the blog. Let us know if you we missed something you are curious about! A year of challenges, a year of reinventing traditions to keep everyone safe, a year of pivoting and innovation. And a year where the community came together to support each other in a big way! Thanks to the generosity of the Calgary community the CBC Calgary Food Bank Drive campaign raised $1,447,291.42! From online coffee, sweater and bake sales to virtual cookie parties, concerts, holiday markets and sharing acts of kindness it was a year to remember. We want to thank the... crew at CBC Calgary for working incredibly diligently to make this campaign a success and supporting the community during a very difficult year. Thank you to everyone who continued to support the campaign, and thank you to the new folks and businesses who contributed this year. [Link] Products with a shelf life of less than 90 days are required to have a best before date, although they are found on items, like canned goods, with a longer shelf life. No wonder there is confusion! Unopened canned goods are among some of the safest foods, especially when stored in a cool pantry. https://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/bestbefore/
Our volunteers are vital to ensure that our clients and partners get the food support they need. Volunteers provided more than 48% of the hours needed to keep the food moving. Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us to support our fellow Calgarians.

Clean the World partnered with Lifebuoy to distribute hygiene kits to 20 different charities. We were fortunate to be one of the those organizations! Inside each kit was a Lifebuoy bar of soap, hand wash, hand sanitizer, a toothbrush, tooth paste, and a hand written note from the volunteer who packaged the kit. We are grateful for this donation as often hygiene items can be expensive.
Thanks for all that you give to ensure our fellow Calgarians are helped now and in the long run. Wishing you all a safe and healthy holiday season. Happy Holidays from everyone at the Calgary Food Bank! - James McAra, Calgary Food Bank CEO

Smashed Potatoes! Thanks Devour Catering Calgary for turning our potatoes into this delicious comfort food for our clients. It's Waste Reduction Week and today is Food Waste Friday, and a great day to highlight our partnership with Devour Catering. They took our excess potatoes and turned them into delicious smashed potatoes and potato soup that could be frozen and handed out to our clients. The potatoes were able to be used, our clients get a delicious, locally made product, and it helps keep the Devour Catering Staff employed. Win-Win-Win! Normally Calgary Transit buses would be pulling into Calgary Co-op locations across the city this morning, but out of an abundance of caution we have revised our Stuff A Bus event for today. People can still support the event until November 18 by putting a non-perishable food item in the front of store bin or making a contribution at the till if shopping in store. Donations can also be made online. Thank you to our partners and the community for their support and understandi...ng! [Link] http://ow.ly/phuF50CkqZz
It's waste reduction week and one way to reduce waste is to look at your food waste and the costs associated by understanding Best Before dates. There are many complexities around this, but we can start right in our own pantries. [Link] http://ow.ly/CW4350BZSdq #WasteReductionWeek
Let's Talk Science in collaboration with the Canadian Children's Literacy Foundation, Food Banks Canada and Calgary Reads launched an initiative called The Horizon Project. We love our volunteers! Due to COVID-19, we couldn't have our annual gathering to celebrate our volunteers and recognize those reaching milestones so we did this instead. We are incredibly lucky to have folks volunteer with us for years and decades. Yes, decades! We made some special deliveries to recognize those reaching milestones of 5, 10, 15 or 20 years volunteering with us and helping to feed YYC. #FeedYYC #VolunteerYYC... https://youtu.be/fXf5NRl4Q4E See more
