Camp Temagami 26.01.2021

Moving an entire building takes some planning. Thankfully we all have good log rolling skills. Here’s to preserving the Tuck Shop turned new Tool Shed.

Camp Temagami 09.01.2021

Built in 1929 as a Bake House, this building had a wood-fired oven that provided daily fresh bread and other tasty treats. It also functioned as the camp’s cooking stove for the 1930 season. Each summer one young man would have the responsibility of chopping 10 cords of wood to keep the baked goods coming. From approximately 1980 until 2003 this building functioned as the Camp office until it then became our Tuck Shop. Working hard to preserve this piece of our history we carefully moved this building and gave it a facelift and in 2021 we are happy to present it as our new Tool Shed.

We missed everyone on the island this summer but we kept ourselves busy. We’d like to say a big thank you to our work crew; your efforts will be appreciated by all who see your work when they step on the island in summer 2021. Join us over the next few weeks as we share a look at island life and projects completed in 2020.

Wigwasati means shining or silver birch. This name is derived from the Ojibway word Wiigwaasaatig meaning birch tree. This island has many birch trees and is uniquely visible from Big Narrows, Little Narrows and fairly far down the SW arm. It is our understanding that shining birch tree island was referred to this island as a reference point for providing directions. Smoothrock Island is the island S of Camp. This island was mislabeled Smoothrock Island a number of years ago but has recently been remedied.

Last question in our Camp Temagami Trivia series! Thanks to all those that have participated. It has been fun to learn and review so much of our history!
