Here are some updates from the Canadian Payroll association regarding home expenses' claims this year. If you haven't told your tax preparer that you worked from home this year, make sure they know about it! "More than six million employees moved to remote work as a result of the pandemic, leaving employers with many questions from employees on how they can claim their work from home expenses for the 2020 tax year. Seeking to streamline the process due to these exceptional ci...rcumstances, the federal government, through consultation with the Canadian Payroll Association and other key stakeholders, took two important actions. First, they introduced a simplified method for claiming work-from-home expenses for the 2020 tax year. To make a claim, employees will not have to provide proof of expenses (receipts) or obtain a T2200/T2200S from their employer to confirm their status as a remote worker. Second, the government (both federal and Quebec) simplified the traditional forms for claiming home office deductions, the T2200S and TP-64.3 respectively, for those choosing to make a detailed claim."

Some small businesses might be eligible for additional funding from the government. Wishing you all good luck and hoping that this will help you stay afloat for a little bit longer The government unveiled a new Ontario Small Business Support Grant that will provide between $10,000 and $20,000 for struggling business owners. The one-time grant will be offered to businesses employing fewer than 100 people, and that have been required to close or significantly restrict service due to the shutdown, and experienced a minimum revenue decline of 20 per cent. https://ca.finance.yahoo.com//retail-groups-warn-businesse

Many employers have various questions about laying off employees now. Here is the directive from CRA website with regards to ROEs submissions: " Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)... If your employees are directly affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) and they are no longer working, you must issue a Record of Employment (ROE). When the employee is sick or quarantined, use code D (Illness or injury) as the reason for separation (block 16). Do not add comments. When the employee is no longer working due to a shortage of work because the business has closed or decreased operations due to coronavirus (COVID-19), use code A (Shortage of work). Do not add comments. When the employee refuses to come to work but is not sick or quarantined, use code E (Quit) or code N (Leave of absence), as appropriate. Avoid adding comments unless absolutely necessary. " If you are still struggling with ROE submissions, do not hesitate to contact us and we will help you with this: [email protected]

Hoping that these couple of things could help business owners who were affected by closures everywhere. Also, for my fellow Ottawa Valley business owners: I am your Petawawa neighbour and a member of the Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce. I have been working remotely for years and am a QuickBooks Online and Xero advisor. I also have accounting and marketing education and experience. Over the years I worked with various businesses, including e-commerce (which some of you might... need help with right now). In fact, my experience with e-commerce doesnt end with accounting support, but also extends to stores development as well as technical and marketing support. I will be happy to spend with any one of you up to 15 min on the phone to resolve your problem. This may include bookkeeping software support, general bookkeeping questions, management of remote teams, apps integrations with your accounting software, e-commerce, and any other business-related questions. I am only asking you to, please, schedule your calls with me so I could help everyone who needs it. You may do so over here: https://calendly.com/canadiancloudaccounting/15min You may also send your questions via email to [email protected] For more information about what we do and how we work, please, visit: https://canadiancloudaccounting.ca/ Stay happy, healthy, and safe!
