The two most common findings on a young stock necropsy are dehydration and undernutrition. Adjusting the nutritional program and feeding strategies in the cold weather helps keep calves healthy.

This series of photos from PennState illustrates the process of rumen development in dairy calves. Calves must transition from a simple-stomached animal that di...gests milk to a ruminant that digests solid feed. The goal is to have a more fully developed rumen before weaning calves off milk. By feeding starter and a little roughage before calves are weaned, they are better prepared (rumen is more developed) to digest the nutrients of solid food once it becomes their sole food source. Promoting rumen development before weaning is key to ensuring the calf is ready to transition to solid feed without experiencing a lag in growth. Ensuring calves have fully developed rumens sets them up for success. Source: https://extension.psu.edu/photos-of-rumen-development

This calf was born premature. Calves born significantly earlier than their actual due date have many challenges to overcome in order survive. Despite the odds their owner consulted and worked hard at providing intensive care for him. Below you will find a before and after photo of the patient! What a great case with a rewarding outcome!
Interesting concept as we head into another cold plunge!
Happy New Year!
