Meet our Members Over the next several weeks, we would like to introduce you to our members, who come from communities across the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and beyond. Some are founding members, while others have joined the Chorale in recent years. We hope you will enjoy getting to know the people behind the faces and voices of the Cape Breton Chorale. Name: Adam Young... Hometown: French Road Joined the Chorale in: January 2018 By day: Internet Content and New Media Officer, Parks Canada Other hobbies: Piano, hiking, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, photography A short memory about the Chorale (memorable performance, favourite piece, or memory ): I'm fairly new to the Chorale and have only performed in a couple of concerts as a member of the group. One memory that sticks out is the first time hearing Rise Again in rehearsal. I'd heard the song sung for about 30 years but hadn't been in the room when the Chorale sang it. That final note just lingers in the air long after the choir has stopped singing. It’s amazing to experience live, and especially as a part of the group. That's happened with a couple of pieces since then, and the feeling never gets old! Photo: Taken by Dave Phillips Photography, Manchester, UK

One of the other features we look forward to bringing to our followers is to present follow-up spots to highlight past recipients of the Sister Rita Clare Scholarship, which is an ongoing project for the choir. Today, we would like to bring you our recipient from 2014, Morgan Reid. Morgan Reid Sr. Rita Clare Scholarship Testimonial Growing up in Cape Breton, I was constantly surrounded by music and influenced by the tight-knit, musical community around me. I believe it i...s fair to say that nearly everyone had a connection, story, or support from Sr. Rita Clare in one way or another. With that in mind, I was delighted to have received this scholarship in honour of such an important pillar of our community. At the time, my musical studies were only just beginning! Having this sort of support meant the world to me as I started my journey and still brings me great joy today, knowing that my community believed in me and helped me on my way. A very large part of what I do today comes from my roots in Cape Breton and I am so grateful for that! From 2014 to 2018, Morgan attended Mount Allison University for a Bachelor of Music, studying voice performance. She then moved to Toronto, attending the University of Toronto for a Master of Music in Voice Performance (2018-2020) and has just entered into her first year of Doctoral studies in U of T’s Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance program. She works as a private voice teacher for classical and musical theatre voice, as an arts administrator, and, of course, frequently performs in a variety of concerts, recitals, opera, and musical theatre. Morgan often returns home to Nova Scotia to perform, with her most recent engagements at the Highland Arts Theatre (Sydney, NS) and Halifax Summer Opera Festival (Halifax, NS). The Cape Breton Chorale would like to congratulate Jimmy Rankin, singer-songwriter from Mabou, whose ballad,Fare The Well Love, has been added to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Stuart Calvert, of Glace Bay, prepared the choral arrangement of Fare Thee Well Love, which was recorded by the Cape Breton Chorale in 1997 for the album, Songs of Atlantic Canada. It has been performed by the chorale during the Celtic Colours International Festival here at home, as well as in... concerts throughout the rest of Canada and overseas. Fare Thee Well Love is an exquisite example of song writing, said Vanessa Thomas, CSHF Executive Director. The song’s haunting beauty and emotion transcends genre, time and space and takes your breath away. The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame will be adding Fare Thee Well Love to its permanent and interactive exhibition at the National Music Centre in Calgary, that features a celebrated catalogue of inducted songs that fans can listen to, as well as displays, exclusive artifacts, and one-of-a-kind memorabilia celebrating Canada’s greatest songwriters and Inductees.
