Remembering Taran Kootenhayoo: Our hearts are with those in our university community mourning the loss of Taran Kootenhayoo of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation and the Denesuline First Nation, a 2015 graduate of Capilano University and a recognized Indigenous artist, actor and playwright. Among his many artistic accomplishments, in 2018 Kootenhayoo was named a Star to Watch by the Whistler Film Festival for his role in the film Bella Ciao and in 2019 he earned the Most Promisin...g Newcomer prize at the Jessie Awards. Additionally, he performed in a number of screenplays and live theater roles in western Canada. He played the character of Remy in the TV series Literally, and voiced the role of Randall in the animated fantasy series Molly of Denali. In a tribute to his talent, the filmmakers of Bella Ciao have made the film available to view free online. Kootenhayoo embodied the values and commitments of Truth and Reconciliation and remained involved in the Kéxwusm-áyakn Indigenous Student Centre at CapU.
