The good news is, your results are normal. Her eyes fell. I've come to learn is that good news for me isn’t always good news for patients. ... I’ve often said to my patients: In the school of medicine I am trained in, we do not yet know everything. We know a lot, and we still are learning a lot, but the human body is an incredible and complex system. It would be hubris to claim we understand every single thing about it. I am a privileged white, able-bodied cis-woman of high socioeconomic status in a profession of power. With me, I carry the baggage + conditioning, the privilege + narrow experience of someone in my position. I acknowledge that there is an unfathomable amount of information + perspective I do not have when it comes to living as anything other than what I am. I have not had "unexplainable" symptoms or chronic pain. I have not been labelled psychogenic or medication-seeking. I do not use or depend on mobility aids to do my activities of daily living. But I care for people who do. This means I have to listen to them + ask them what I can do to make their experience better. I have to believe them + see them + be open to sharing their perspective. Perspective-sharing is one of the best strategies I have identified for improving my relationships with patients. Please join my friend Kat @bumpandhustle and I for our upcoming speaker series, The New Bedside Manners. We’re diving into how to improve the patient-provider relationship + dismantle the judgment, separation + discrimination that is so prevalent in healthcare encounters. When: Monday April 12th at 1pm MST/3pm EST on Clubhouse How: Follow @bumpandhustle and @carlycrewe. Sign up for Clubhouse and follow us there too (same handles!).
