He is handsome. He is intense. He will be featured in many movies this winter season. He is a Siberian husky. He was bred for generations to be independent. He... was bred to run for miles without stopping. He was bred to be hardy and agile - and able to problem solve his way out of any situation. Including your backyard. He can climb trees. He can swim in sub zero temps to get to where he needs to go. Your fence is no problem. He will have bounds of energy. Enough energy to run 1000 miles across the state of Alaska in sub zero temperatures. The same energy that if not spent - will be used to eat your couch, your walls, your hardwood floor. He will have the stubborn nature of a pack animal with a desire to cooperate as a team. If you don't meet his needs, he will begin to take over your house. He will find ways to control the family. He will guard his food. He will guard his toys. And before you know it you will become less of a friend - and more of a resource. He has the intellect of a born genius, but with a strong independence. He has no problem disobeying you to protect himself. For generations sled dogs were relied on to keep a musher safe... which meant not taking a team over dangerous weak ice - even if it was asked. He can withstand sub zero temps and he can repel the rays of the sun. But that is because he will be constantly shedding. Leaving fur throughout your home and cloths. Lint rollers will do nothing. And boy isn't his howl beautiful. AT 2AM just because. He might be crate trained but he just likes to talk. Constantly. Especially when the snow starts to fall. But you will see him all over the big screen this winter. He will look cute. He will be fluffy and sweet. He will obey his master perfectly. He will be a model citizen. Don't let Disney give you these unrealistic expectations. Do your homework. Research. Join your local breed club. Are you willing to spend hours a week ... per day.... exercising, socializing and training your dog. Not just as a puppy - forever. Are you willing to sacrifice your furniture and personal belongings because that puppy will get bored at some point? Are you willing to vacuum your house 1-2x per day and pay for a groomer to help you with the constant shedding of fur? Are you willing to find a really good trainer that specializes in independent breeds? Are you willing to have a dog that has a high prey drive and cannot be off Leash or around small prey animals. Are you willing to be outside in sub zero temperatures for many months of the year because it is your dogs favorite time to be out? Are you going to change your lifestyle and become an avid hiker of runner so you can satisfy your dogs inner desire to explore? Because this pup essentially is a lifestyle dog. To meet his needs you have to be willing to mold a lifestyle. If the answer is yes then a husky MIGHT be a good choice for you. **Please feel free to share this link. Wedding photos are back! Still trying to figure out how I'm gonna share them all, but figured I'd start here. Having my best girl part of our day was the best d...ecision I ever made. Most of you know, my dad passed away 5 years ago and 1 week later I got Harbor to help get me through the grief. Seemed only right that she was the one to walk me down the aisle with a picture of my dad around her neck Makenzie Lauren Photography
