On Thursday, November 19, 2020, the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act (C12) was introduced. It needs improvements and politicians are looking for suggestions. After much consideration here are our specific recommendations for improvement.

The world is pricing carbon. The Premiers of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario must know that by now. No?

LAST YEAR WAS A RECORD YEAR FOR FIELD REPORTS and 2021 IS OFF TO A GREAT START. Our leader in Winnipeg, Lori Bohn, recently had a letter to the editor published in the Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com//letters-jan-4-573523422 "In fact, the EU is scheduled to start border carbon adjustments in 2023. If used in Canada, along with a robust carbon price, our emissions will be even lower. Canadians for Clean Prosperity estimates that we can reach a reduct...ion of 114 million tonnes, reaching 148 per cent of our Paris targets by 2030 with only these measures.? Letters, Jan. 4 Posted: 01/4/2021 3:00 AM Carbon tax one of many tools Re: A realistic plan for reducing emissions (Dec. 23) I agree with the writer that using our electricity better, and having incentives for more sustainable transportation, can lead to decreased greenhouse gas emissions. However, he mentions that carbon pricing is inadequate in practice and that B.C.’s emissions have not declined with a carbon tax. As a result of the carbon fee in B.C., even though the economy has expanded considerably, the greenhouse gases have not, pointing to much lower carbon emissions intensity. Also, both Sweden and the U.K. have had success with pricing carbon, resulting in decreasing emissions. Though carbon pricing cannot be the only tool to decrease GHG emissions, it can be a major one, and stimulates new technology to further decrease emissions. Some politicians have misled constituents about the carbon fee and dividend in order to cause fear and gain power. They have disregarded the fact that if using the tax to refund citizens (the best use of the fee) they will be paid back equally or even more than the carbon fees they pay. The new government plan to pay out dividends quarterly should help make this clear to citizens. At this time the full carbon price in Canada is not applied to industry, which also limits its effectiveness. Transitioning to border carbon adjustments, which puts a tariff on goods from countries without a carbon price, and then applying the full carbon price to industry, will help to further decrease emissions, prevent industries from relocating and encourage other countries to price carbon. In fact, the EU is scheduled to start border carbon adjustments in 2023. If used in Canada, along with a robust carbon price, our emissions will be even lower. Canadians for Clean Prosperity estimates that we can reach a reduction of 114 million tonnes, reaching 148 per cent of our Paris targets by 2030 with only these measures. On Monday, November 23, psychologist Dr. Renée Lertzman helped us all achieve new heights in our activism. She has spent years straddling environmental work and psychology. Singer-song writer Angie Nussey opened the event with a special song that called us on to have heart accountability. Together we embarked on a journey of learning how being in tune with our own emotions and the emotions of others around us with regards to the issue of the climate crisis can be harnessed to make us all better human beings and climate activists. We are working with CCL friends in 62 countries around the world towards an incrementally rising carbon price with border carbon adjustments. This will go a long way to shifting investments to clean energy globally.
