City Rinks Toronto 13.11.2020

Dufferin Rink: There has been correspondence on a local listserv that since the rink demolition was postponed for so long (covid), some skaters would like the city to run the current rink for one more season and not demolish it until March. The thread was started by shinny player Ian Merringer. #runtherink #dontdemodufferin Ana Bailao

Sept.23, 2020: CIMCO Refrigeration, part of Toromont Industries, has been awarded a new three year rink maintenance contract (they have always had this contract), for $3.99 million, to begin on Oct.1, 2020.

Relevant to Dufferin Rink... but maybe others too.... I hear that there were some families that had a good time skating with their kids at Dufferin Rink earlier today, in the sun and the open air. Apparently a city staff person came and was angry that the gate had been unlocked. He said that people in this neighbourhood think they're above the rules. But of course that's not true -- families just want to take good care that their kids get fresh air and exercise. People shou...ldn't be mad at the staff person, though -- city staff are told they should not think for themselves, they must follow orders. So it's not his fault that he got mad, he must have been worried that he'd get in trouble. At 2 p.m., the last family on the rink agreed to shut the lock as soon as their kids had another 15 minutes to skate. That way the ice won't get deep gouges from skates, now that the sun is strong. The rink can firm up again for one more evening or morning for people to enjoy an open-air skate. I have copied the mayor on this email, to show that families do need to take their kids outside, and he should praise city staff, not blame them., and encourage them to help make things work at this tough time. As of 7.50 a.m. on Saturday, all outdoor rinks are listed as closed. Those rinks, some with good ice, have had very few skaters during the last few days. Low usage is normal for this time of year -- skaters are tired of winter. But it was certainly compounded by the Covid-19 fears. ...

On Friday March 13, 2020, city staff announced they would be closing almost all city facilities because of Covid-19 until at least April 5. Even though kids will need something to do and fresh air is arguably better than all-day screen time, the outdoor rinks are also closed.

On Friday, the temperature is 5C, sun and cloud. Many city rinks are listed as closed for "ice conditions", like Harry Gairey hockey pad, Broadlands, Cedarvale, Col.Sam Smith, Dieppe, Glen Long, High Park, McCowan, Royalcrest, Scarbrough Civic, Sherbourne Common, Sir Adam Beck, Valleyfield, Martingrove, Pleasantview, West Mall, and Westway. Even the rinks that have been open, some with good ice, during the last few days have had very few skaters. That's normal for this time of year -- skaters are tired of winter. Or is this compounded by Covid-19 fears?

At 5.30 p.m. on Sunday, the temperature is 12C and it's sunny. All city outdoor rinks listed as closed for "ice conditions" EXCEPT Christie, Greenwood hockey pad, Nathan Phillips, North Toronto, Pleasantview, and Rosedale. But Christie is not skateable either, so the information may be wrong for the other "open" rinks too -- except for Nathan Phollips, which is in shade because of the big hotel.
