Bucks Green Christmas Day Horse Custom - Bucks Green, Sussex, UK at the Fox Inn While most folks are slaving over hot stoves or opening their presents, the locals at the Fox Inn at Bucks Green have quite a different event on Christmas Day each year. A horse walks through the bar at the pub preceding Christmas lunch, perhaps in order to preserve an ancient right of way, though nobody seems to know the origin of the custom for certain. The horse is usually treated to carrots a...nd sometimes beer (well, it is Christmas after all.) then after his visit lunch can be served. The horse walks in through the front door and follows a brick path right past the bar to the back entrance, where he meets his adoring crowd and has a graze on the lawn. Visitors are welcome either for lunch (which books up well in advance) or for drinks. And yes, somebody DID say Why the long face? when the horse walked into the bar, so that’s probably a tradition too! A Carriage Ride Through History From the archives of our friends at Horse Community Journals Inc. From pony cart to coronation coach, few vehicles have had such a colourful history as the horse-drawn carriage. ... Ever since the wheel was first invented around 3,500 BC in Mesopotamia as a wooden disc with a hole in the middle for some form of axle, creative Sumarian minds were buzzing. They were, after all, already planting crops, herding animals, and had a pretty impressive social order. But getting the wheel contraption right took a bit of creative genius. The holes in the centre of the disc and at the ends of the axle had to be perfectly smooth and round in order for the wheel to fit and turn. Otherwise, too much friction would cause breakage. Horses with Jobs: Logging Horses Horses and oxen have been used to haul logs since pre-industrial times. Much of it was small scale harvesting, but it was hard and hazardous work. Unstable and snagged trees, falling branches, and loose material were the widow makers of a rapidly growing but dangerous industry. But as settlers arrived in Canada, more land had to be cleared for home-building, farming, and travel. Ultimately, horses and oxen were replaced with machinery and logging trucks. But today, some people have kept the heritage of horse logging alive. Read more: https://www.horsejournals.com/li/horses-jobs-logging-horses

Barbed Wire Strung Together the First Telephone System Due to southwest Saskatchewan’s geographic location and sparse population, we realized generations ago that if we want something done, we have to do it ourselves. One of our great do-it-yourself ideas turned barbed wire fences into a communications network. Barbed wire, considered not very neighbourly in the last days of the open range, in this instance helped neighbours to communicate. The top strand of the barbed wire w...as used as a phone line in what was known as the fence phone. Read more:http://ow.ly/Y9aI50BNwwo * Please note CQHA shares these links as information only. John Ware Reclaimed: Filling the Gap in Black Canadian History Recent media coverage around the world has shone a light on stories about contemporary Black American cowboys: the Compton Cowboys of Los Angeles, Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club in Philadelphia, Brianna Noble, the BLM horsewoman/protester in Oakland. The prevalence of Black men and women in cowboy and ranching culture and history has begun to be highlighted in recent years, agrees Black Alberta-based filmmake...r Cheryl Foggo. Yet this fascinating history was erased or suppressed in the past. In addition to celebrating this history now, I think it’s important to look critically at the reasons why the erasure happened in the first place. It’s important to ensure that we’re not upholding or perpetuating incomplete cultural narratives. Helping to fill the gap in Black Canadian history, specifically Black cowboy and ranching culture, comes Foggo’s feature length documentary John Ware Reclaimed, produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). Study: Horses Find ‘Comfort’ After Trimming and Reshoeing Does your horse enjoy a good foot trim? According to a new study, he just might. Researchers recently observed that in the week following trimming and reshoeing, horses tend to take more steps than before the trim, and they spend more time in a relaxed position. I think it’s akin to the feeling you get after you trim your fingernails and toenails, said Jay A. Daniel, PhD, professor of animal science at Berry College,... in Mount Berry, Georgia. They just feel a bit better. Read more; http://ow.ly/Y3be50BNyTi * Please note CQHA shares these links as information only.
