Have you ever seen a pitcher plant before? Another one of nature’s interesting carnivorous plants, these specimens develop pitcher-leaves which are partially filled with a digestive liquid. Insects are attracted to the sweet nectar secreted by the lid of the pitcher, but the slippery rim of the pitcher causes them to slide into the trap below, where they are slowly digested by enzymes. Fun Fact: Pitcher Plants, like all carnivorous plants, evolved in soils which were too... poor in minerals, or too acidic, for most plants to survive. This #SucculentSunday, we decided to talk about a common succulent problem: Fungus! Have you noticed growing brown spots on your succulent’s leaves? Do you have succulents that are slowly turning a bronze colour? These ailments could be the result of a spreading fungus that is most commonly caused by high humidity, water sitting on the leaves, or too little sunlight. Since succulents are desert plants, they are adapted for hot, dry, sunny conditions - making them susceptible... to fungal problems in shady spots or humidity domes. Tips for avoiding succulent fungus: Water succulents from the bottom, or with a long watering can spout that can reach through the leaves to the soil Keep them in a spot where they get lots of sun and warmth (direct sun is great!) Our fresh cut trees are a premium quality that is exclusive to Anything Grows, but you don’t have to break the bank - there are beautiful options to suit any budget. Here’s what makes our Christmas Trees so special: We make it... our mission to bring in premium trees that will look beautiful, smell great, and stay fresh in your home. We provide only ‘Premium’ and ‘#1’ graded trees, which means they have an even taper, a preferable density, are freshly cut, and have three or more perfect sides, making them near-perfect trees. When you come to pick out your tree, you’ll have the cream of the crop to choose from! We supply Frasers, Balsams, and Douglas Fir that range from 4 to 9 feet tall. We prefer these varieties because they are far more likely to stay fragrant, softer to the touch, and are best for needle retention in our climate (when watered regularly). This mix also allows us to offer a variety of ‘Christmas Tree Styles’ and price alternatives for every budget. While it’s a good idea to get your tree early (they will be in high demand this year!), it’s best to leave it frozen outside until December 1st. When do I prune? Perhaps one of the questions we get asked most this time of year. In fact, as a general rule you don’t want to prune your trees and shrubs in the fall. This can trigger new growth, which will be destroyed by frost and can weaken the plant going into the winter season. So... what can you prune?... Perennial plants (trimming them back to the ground once they’ve died keeps the mess down in the spring and takes away potential nests for bugs and slugs) Ornamental grasses (you can also leave them if you want the hay look next year) Suckers (if you’ve got a suckering tree or shrub, you’re safe to prune those babies) Dead branches (just be sure to check it’s not green under the bark, first!) If you’ve got a gardener’s restless trigger finger and absolutely must prune some problem growth from a tree or shrub this fall, wait until there has been several hard frosts and the cold has stuck, to ensure the plant is dormant and avoid triggering new growth.
