The smell! Fresh damp earth and new growth, humidity in the air Ferns transplanted into their hanging baskets, they'll be hand watered by our handsome & talented Grower (my husband) until they're quite mature and then we'll hang them above us where they'll be watered by dripper lines (stay posted for that, next to today thats my next favourite greenhouse milestone, it makes it feel like a jungle in here!). When I walked in this afternoon I was SO excited. When we move... into our main growing area and it starts filling with green like this, it just makes my heart sing, I don't know how else to describe it. Hope you're hanging in there and this makes your heart feel a little good too! See more

Little baby Elephant Ears have been transplanted to their bigger 6" pots already :) These are some of my favourites to watch grow because I know the incredible tropical beauties they become, and they grow so fast. This was my first year having an Alocasia because I didn't have a good sheltered spot for one before (you can imagine these great big leaves catch the wind very easily). I loved it so much I got 3 more, and I brought one in over the Wintertime too. They like spa...ces with bright indirect light, and grow best in a big pot with well draining soil. They're so lush, and massive, they're an incredible centerpiece in your large pots, or as an indoor plant. I know watching their leaves unfurl was a source of huge joy for many of you last season, I think we were tagged in pictures of new Elephant Ear leaves than anything else, and I Loved it! It's so exciting every single time :D See more

We're having lots of fun planting some of your favourites over here lately! This is the Banana Plant, hugely popular for it's incredible leaves. Check out how little they are right now! It won't be long before they're their own lush jungle for my kids to explore this Winter again. The first picture is from last season. I'm so excited! Banana Plant 'Abyssinian' will grow up to 8ft! It's fantastic as a centerpiece for containers, or as a showpiece all on it's own. It's a...lso very easy to care for. It does well in sun to part shade in a nice sheltered space so wind doesn't damage its beautiful fronds, and enjoys frequent watering. It's extremely satisfying seeing new leaves constantly rolling out of the centre. I'm a big fan of banana plants. You? See more

New year, new growth Beautiful new roots on these fuschias, one of the most showy shade plants (swipe right for a flower) & a little update on some of our other baby plants basking in the warmth and humidity. Our fuschias begin as cuttings propogated in soil. Between now and Spring we'll transplant them several times into larger pots, and also take further cuttings to start more plants as well.

I love TopNine posts because they tell a little story of what a year held, and this one is a story we won’t quickly forget: In March we opened for our season and closed our doors a mere 26 hours later when the State of Emergency was declared. Within a week we had set up an online store from scratch, and had met (virtually) and been supported by some incredible people as we learned and got this running (I’m looking at you Swati and Victoria @acre75 !). We had an incredible ou...tpouring of support from our faithful regulars, and saw so many new customers buying our products for the first time too looking for a little piece of sunshine for yourself, and also buying gifts for family and friends while we had to be apart. Being in a position to provide some beauty over the past year has been such a blessing for us. This year has been so much hard work, full of anxiety and fear, but also full of people supporting each other however they could, building each other up, and supporting one another through a global challenge, and we’re so grateful to be part of that kind of community. Much love to all of you, congratulations on sending off 2020 and all the best for 2021! What’s something good you’ve found about 2020? Also, we see you like Giveaways and Dahlias so we’ll make sure we have plenty of each of those for you in 2021!

The Mandevilla are planted These beauties are immensely popular, so we plant A LOT of them. In fact, they have their own greenhouse which is kept very warm, especially for them (they're tropical plants, so a beautiful, warm, humid house for these beauties) and will now be my favourite place for the rest of the Winter. It's easy to forget that it's frigid outside when you visit the Mandevilla house. They're each planted by hand into our CP soil blend, for no...w they're planted into 4" pots and as they grow we'll transplant them into larger hanging baskets or patio pots, wherever they'll be looking beautiful. They're also watered by hand until that time too. Lots of time and love goes into these beauties! I think maybe I'll post every time it snows for now, deal? It's nice to see some green and think about Spring See more

First snow today & our first crop of the season has sprouted it's tiny seedlings nice and toasty in it's humid greenhouse, oblivious to the sparkling white outside! Something about snow and freshly germinated seedlings! ... Hope you have a beautiful day! Behind the Greens: These are our spike crop, sown way back at the end of September, hand watered several times a day since then and continue to get lots of close attention and TLC at this stage by our Grower, Mark (co-owner with his sister Denise, and also my husband ). "Oh no Mama! What happened to your plant?! ...was it bugs?" - my 3 year old this morning. This monstera adansonii is actually supposed to look like this, but every now and then someone asks our advice on dealing with pests in their houseplants, and it's almost Halloween so talking about bugs seems appropriate At Colour Paradise Greenhouses we use biological pest controls (Good bugs to kill bad bugs), and for your plants at home we recommend doing the same! ... You can order them from Natural Insect Control (NIC) out of Niagara and they'll ship directly to your house :) A wonderful, environmentally friendly (and very effective!) way to get rid of the bugs causing you grief! www.naturalinsectcontrol.com We just love this method of dealing with problem bugs in the greenhouse, it's such a natural, down to earth solution for a common greenhouse problem that nature has already designed a perfect solution for! Have you used natural insect control? Do you have any other advice for managing plant pests?

So it’s the middle of October and your mandevilla is still looking fabulous (incredible eh! Didn’t I tell you this is an amazing plant?!), we’ve received multiple DMs about how to overwinter these beauties. Here’s what you need to know: Bring them in now if you haven’t already. Take a good look for bugs if necessary, you can use an insecticidal soap and change the soil. Find them a bright, sunny location to live. ... They’ll flower for you for a little while yet but will stop through the winter. In January prune them down to of their current size. In March repot and start fertilizing. When it’s consistently T-Shirt weather (above 15C) you can take them back outside, and expect to see them flowering again around the end of July after they’ve spent some good time in the hot, humid heat! Yes, ours do flower much earlier and that’s because these are tropical plants and we have them in their favourite environment: super bright, humid and warm! Have you overwintered your mandevilla in the past? How’d it go, tell us your experience & advice below! See more
