In case you missed it! Since early 2019, CommunityWise has worked with an Indigenous Advisory Group, led by Blackfoot elder Jackie Bromley, to learn about and address anti-Indigenous racism as part of our Anti-Racist Organizatonal Change (AROC) process. The members of this group, as well as Nicole Eshkakogan, the consultant that supported us in forming and working with the group, sat down with Michelle Robinson of Native Calgarian in October 2020 to discuss the work they did with CommunityWise. We are grateful for their contributions and look forward to deepening our relationships with them as we take action on their recommendations for Indigenous-led solutions for equity and anti-racism. (A summary of the report mentioned in the podcast will be released soon!) https://www.youtube.com/watch

Time Capsule Reminder! Please forward contributions for the CommunityWise short-term time capsule to [email protected]. As a shared building for so many different groups, we are seeking contributions from members such as: short notes; messages; photos; artifacts; news/organizational clippings; or web links that show what things are like for you these days or what your organization is doing during this time. We are open to including just about anything and aim to open... the capsule in February 2022 as a community activity. Please submit contributions to [email protected] by 6pm on February 12. Items can also be mailed to #101, 223 12 Avenue SW; or dropped off at the building in the CommunityWise admin office door mailslot or the mailbox on the porch. Let us know if you have dropped something off so staff can collect promptly.

Things continue to look different at CommunityWise. Our common rooms remain closed to bookings, resulting in a sizeable revenue decrease. Your support during this time is tremendously appreciated and will allow us to continue to deliver on our mission while navigating the ongoing pandemic safely and equitably and plan for the future http://tiny.cc/bl1zsz Your donation can be directed to one of the following areas:... 1. General (will go to area of greatest need): your donation will be used toward the priority area CommunityWise determines to be the most urgent at the time of your donation. 2. Anti-Racist Organizational Change (AROC): the goals of AROC are to address organizational racism and create greater racial equity within CommunityWise while also sharing lessons learned with other nonprofits. Your donation will support various pieces of this work, including the staff time required to facilitate it and the development of new resources. 3. Rent support for current CommunityWise Members: COVID-19 has resulted in increased barriers for grassroots groups, particularly those that rely on community donations and in-person fundraisers. Your donation will support continued access to affordable office space for grassroots groups. 4. Building maintenance and improvements: CommunityWise operates the "Old YWCA" building, a beautiful, but aging, provincially registered historic resource. Your donation will support ongoing building maintenance and improvement costs.

Taking a moment to acknowledge the fabulous contributions of Crystal, who joined us 8 weeks ago in the role of Administrative Support. The weeks have absolutely flown by. Crystal is insightful, flexible, steady, encouraging, funny, and so multi-skilled! 2020 has been a very different year of remote work and connecting for our usually place-based staff team and Crystal has been such an asset and support as we've all tried to figure out how to navigate these strange times. Thank you so much, Crystal!

Due to the ongoing pandemic, it is not possible to host an in-person Trans Day of Remembrance service as in past years but we can still be together through our ...Facebook event. Please join us on November 20th as we share interviews with local members of the trans community, memorialize trans lives that have been lost in Canada, and remember those from around the world whose lives were lost in the past year due to transphobic violence. In preparation for upcoming construction work, fencing has been erected in front of the building. Access to the building through the front entrance, including the wheelchair ramp, will be unaffected. The parking pad will no longer be available.
