As we head into summer, let's make it a priority to check a few things to make our homes a bit safer....replace the batteries in any battery-operated smoke alarms. Also, did you know that ALL smoke alarms that are over 10 years old are required to be replaced? There is a date code on every smoke alarm in your home, and you should take it down and have a peek. Give us a call if you're unsure of yours and we can help!... A wonderful summer to all!!!

It's that time of year again.... shopping, festivities, and good ol'fashioned cheer! A reminder from your friends at Contec to take some steps to protect your home and your family this Christmas Season: 1. Change the batteries in your smoke alarms at home, and be sure to test them for proper operation .... 2. When dressing the Christmas tree or outside lights, make sure you are using lights that don't have damaged or repaired wiring.... this is always a fire hazard. 3. If you have a home security system, make sure to test that it is working properly, and be sure to arm it when you leave the house. 4. If you have a wood-burning fireplace , be sure to have it cleaned before the heavy winter use. 5. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE..... we want you all to be here next year too! Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a festive, and Happy New Year! Cheers, Costa

IMPORTANT: PLEASE CHECK THE DATE STAMP ON YOUR SMOKE ALARMS! Under the new BC Building and Fire Codes, all smoke alarms older than 10 years MUST be replaced.

The fires in Greece have been devastating. This is a clear indication of how powerless we are in escaping a fast-moving fire. Although the conditions are not the same here, we all risk the same fate if a fire breaks out in our homes and we have little or no warning. Please check the batteries in your smoke alarms, and test them regularly. Its not the fire that kills most of the time...its the smoke. Most importantly, NEVER disconnect your smoke alarms because they are se...t off by burnt toast and bathroom steam. Instead, replace them with the latest smoke alarms that have the latest technology in false alarm filtering. Let this be a lesson in how fast a fire can develop and spread, costing us our lives, and those of our loved ones if we arent careful and pro-active.

With the recent stretch of hot weather in Vancouver, we would like to remind our friends and followers to be mindful of taking extra care not to throw out cigarette butts on the road, and to be ever mindful that this hot, dry weather is a fire hazard of the greatest proportion. Be safe, take care, and protect our environment!!!

Shopping for presents this Christmas? Heres a few pointers to keep in mind: - When leaving presents in your vehicle, make sure you leave them in your trunk, and make sure you lock your doors. Dont give thieves any reason to pick your vehicle. - Park in well lit spaces, especially in underground parkades. - DO NOT leave packages in your front or back seats.... - As you pay for gifts, beware of people looking over your shoulder at your credit card or debit card PIN, and be wary if the cashier "needs" to swipe your card more than once. - Keep and eye on all of your gifts that you purchased, and if you have to put something down to look at another gift, keep it in front of you, not to the left or right side. - Once you get your gifts home to wrap, keep them out of view, should someone look into your windows. - On Christmas Day, once youve opened your presents, DO NOT simply leave the boxes on the balcony, or deck...if youre not keeping them, flatten them out and keep them out of sight until you are ready to dispose of them for recycling. Thieves like to "check out" what you got for Christmas, so they know what they are looking for, if they break in to your home. - Finally, during this time of season, it is imperative to remember to arm your security alarm system, even when you go to bed. By taking these steps, and many more, you are helping to protect your purchases, your home, and your identity. Merry Christmas to all, and a very Happy New Year!

During this festive holiday season, lets keep some things in mind regarding fire prevention and safety around the home. Candles - If youre burning candles for aromatherapy or ambiance, make sure that you extinguish them before going to bed.... - Also, keep flammable things like tablecloths, pillows, and other flammable items away from burning candles. - Keep young children (and some adults...lol) away from burning candles, and place them where they cannot be easily knocked over. - Keep a small fire extinguisher in the corner of the room, or somewhere close and accessible in case of fire. Christmas Tree and other electrical decorations - If your Christmas Tree has many lights that get warm, make sure to maintain space between the lights and any paper or cloth ornaments you may have. - Check the wiring for nicks or other damage, and DO NOT simply wrap them wire with electrical tape, if damaged. - Always replace damages light strings. - Keep spare bulbs handy for quick replacement, and always unplug the lights before changing faulty light bulbs. - DO NOT OVERLOAD power bars and extension cords. ALWAYS use power bars over extension cords where possible, since power bars have current overload protection. - DO NOT TRY TO REPAIR DAMAGES CORDS!!! This is electrical work, and should be done properly by qualified personnel. - Test all electrical decorations before using them, and inspect them for loose connections and wire damage. - Try to distribute these decorations between several outlets, if possible, in order to share the load between two or more circuit breakers. - Older homes require additional safety measures, due to the age and condition of older wiring, especially aluminum wiring. If you leave the house, make sure to turn off all electrical decorations, including the tree, and make sure not to leave any burning candles unattended. Test your smoke alarms, and replace any batteries that are in battery-operated, or battery-backed-up smoke alarm units. Lets all take a few minutes during the holidays to make our homes safer for us and our families. All the best of the Christmas season to everyone!!

Hi all....a short blurb on fire extinguishers in the home. Every home should have a small 2-1/2 lb ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher in or around the kitchen. They are small, easy to install, and may help to extinguish a small stove or toaster fire one day. They should be replaced or serviced every six years, and they should be gently whacked (technical term) on their side once a year and flipped upside down for a minute or so to let the dry chemical sift down. Over the course of the year, it tends to "clump" up and this means it may not work when you need it. Look for a video I will be posting shortly to show you how you can keep your home and family a little safer with the inclusion of one (or more) portable fire extinguishers in your home.

Smoke alarm beeping regularly? Most people will pull down and disconnect the local smoke alarm in their home when it starts to "beep" intermittently, and after it a while it becomes so routine, that they never bother to re-connect it again. This is not the right thing to do. Most smoke alarms over time will become more sensitive due to a varying number of factors, such as dust, dirt, and even insects trapped in the sensing chamber.... The reason the smoke alarm is installed in your home is to alert you in the event of a fire breaking out in your home, giving you and your family the chance to escape. Although these smoke alarms can be a nuisance when we burn toast, clean our ovens, or take a shower, they are still a vital part of our homes life safety measures. The good news is that these units are fairly cheap and easy to replace. Simply remove the failing smoke alarm by twisting the unit gently clockwise, and remove the plug attached (as you have probably done so many times! ;) ) , and walk into Canadian Tire or Home Depot or Rona and talk to a sales rep there, who will either help you find a replacement unit of the same type, or another similar type of unit. Its always recommended to get one with a battery backup, for protection during power outages. If you have to replace the failed unit with another unit from a different manufacturer, then there may be some minor electrical work involved. It would be a good idea to talk to someone with some electrical knowledge before attempting to replace the unit yourself. Please feel free to message us with any question regarding this topic. Stay safe!!
