Kamloops RCMP Detachment Media Release February 10, 2021 File: 2021-4320 No insurance file leads police to a motel drug bust... A vehicle with mismatched plates led to Kamloops RCMP officers executing a warrant and seizing thousands of dollars in cash and drugs yesterday. Members of the Kamloops RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), Targeted Enforcement Unit (TEU), and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT), joined together February 9 for the quick execution of a search warrant at a Kamloops motel, which ended with the seizure of approximately five ounces of suspected cocaine, 3.6 ounces of suspected fentanyl, and thousands of dollars in cash. The investigation that led to the bust started earlier that day, when a member of the Crime Reduction Unit arrested a man for driving without insurance on the 1500-block of River Street. The man resisted arrest, but a civilian nearby came to the officer’s aid, allowing him to handcuff the suspect. A search following the arrest led to the discovery of a quantity of drugs. Due to the high-risk nature of the drug trade and the potential threat to officer and civilian safety, Kamloops RCMP requested the assistance of ERT to help ensure the environment remained as safe as possible during the execution of the search warrant, which occurred around 10:45 p.m. at the Riverland Inn and Suites motel. Even in the very initial stages of this investigation, police were met with resistance, illustrating how quickly risk can escalate when dealing with those involved in the illegal drug trade, said Simon Pillay, Staff Sergeant of the Kamloops RCMP Serious Crime Unit. In this case, kudos to the civilian who recognized what was going on and came to the officer’s assistance, Staff Sergeant Pillay added. Thanks to that initial arrest, the officer’s safety was maintained and he was also able to uncover evidence which led to our CRU and TEU teams obtaining and executing a search warrant. That warrant ended with police removing a substantial amount of drugs and cash off the streets and out of the drug trade. A 19-year-old man from Mission was arrested and later released. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information which may assist in this investigation is asked to please call Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000. If you need to remain anonymous you can call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip on our website at www.kamloopscrimestoppers.ca

Kamloops RCMP Public Service Announcement Pedestrian Safety October 9th, 2020... Every year, when the fall arrives and the daylight hours’ decrease, Kamloops experiences a dramatic increase in motor vehicle incidents involving pedestrians. The Kamloops RCMP is reminding everyone to please be aware and be extra vigilant while on the roadway for the safety of everyone. It will make our community a safer place if we all just take a few steps to promote road safety. The Kamloops RCMP provides tips for everyone on the roadway during the fall season: Pedestrians: - Wear bright clothing with reflective material that can be seen by drivers - Always maintain eye contact with the driver approaching you - Don’t assume you have the right of way and walk in the crosswalk, make sure it is safe - Don’t wear head phones or wear your hoody up so it affects your senses - Use established crosswalks at lighted intersections when you can Drivers: - Be ready to yield to pedestrians attempting to cross the roadway - Be focused on driving and put down your cell phone - Always check twice when making turns and make eye contact with pedestrians before moving forward - Be proactive in anticipating what other drivers and pedestrians are going to do - Give yourself extra time to and assume it is going to be slippery Be kind to one another, smile, walk briskly, wave, and thank others for giving you the right of way when crossing. Courtesy for everyone will save lives in our community and hopefully reduce the number of pedestrian accidents we have! It doesn’t matter if you had the right of way if you are laying in a hospital bed says Sgt Darren Michels of the Kamloops Detachment. Sgt Darren Michels Kamloops RCMP

A suspect was captured on video, and his picture is attached in hope that someone may be able to identify him. VAN LAER of the Kamloops RCMP. The male was described as Caucasian, wearing a black hoodie and carrying a red and white back pack. [Photos (x2) are attached to this release] "We are hoping to have a better idea once the videos from all the different locations are collected" said S/Sgt VAN LAER. Update to previous News Release Kamloops RCMP File: 2020-29738 Date: September 4, 2020... On September 4, 2020 at 7:41 AM Kamloops RCMP responded to a call concerning a distraught man. This evolved into an armed and barricaded situation that required RCMP to contain the scene by restricting traffic and evacuating some nearby homes. RCMP Kamloops worked with the South East District Emergency Response Team to deploy a de-escalation process that has successfully resolved this situation. At approximately 9:37 AM a man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported directly to a local medical facility. No parties suffered any injuries through this process and there is no longer any risk in the area. "Seeing highly visible police incidents unfold in residential areas is always unsettling. We would like to thank the people disturbed by this event for their cooperation and understanding. When RCMP members respond to calls like this, public safety is our first priority. As such, we make an area safe so we can de-escalate and hopefully resolve the matter peacefully. In this case, the de-escalation process was successful and the male was eventually apprehended in a cooperative fashion". - S/Sgt Simon Pillay. Although RCMP are still on scene, area restrictions are being lifted and we will be withdrawing the majority of our officers immediately. S/Sgt Simon Pillay - RCMP Kamloops
