This exercise is called thread the needle. It is commonly done with exercise cable weights or elastic bands. Paul is demonstrating this with cups while applying a stretch to end range of motion and then an isotonic resistance back to neutral. This is helpful if the patient's low back pain is more in rotation than in flexion and extension. We teach this amazing treatment in our Advanced Cupping with Movement course.... Here's a great tip for occipital work....use the bottom edge of a plastic vacuum cup and allow the patients head to rest on the cup. It's as simple as that. Use one of our Dong Bang vacuum cups or our kangzhu vacuum cups! www.cuppingcanada.com www.cuppinginternational.com ... Need education? As many of you know we use this slide in class as a bad example of what we see spread around social media. This slide is misinformation at best, damaging to the public perception of how their bodies work at worst. The first problem with this slide is there is no control. What was the colour of the person's skin before cupping. That, and there is no information on the client, their health history, their medication or how the cupping was done (i.e. strength of suction, how lon...g the cups stayed stationary, what condition the patient was in at the time of treatment, etc.) Also, what is the substance that is stagnating, and what possible way will it be treated within a manual therapy context. In western physiology, there are very few things that stagnate in the body and our clients are trained to think in terms of western physiology, if any. Also, the Congestion & Toxins slide - why is the person's skin tone suddenly green, I have never seen that! As for congestion, should we expect to see this when there is a sinus congestion, or chest congestion? Where should it show up? (These are two of the few things that western physiology describes that congest.) And Toxins - what exactly are we talking about there and how will cupping help them go away? Blood and Qi Stagnation as well as toxins are Chinese medicine technical terms, and unless the slide maker/sharer is a TCM practitioner, they probably should not be referring to them. These concepts do not translate to western physiology well and can make the patient believe things about their bodies that are not true. If you have taken a cupping course and this chart was used to explain cupping mark colours I encourage you to take another course (preferably ours) to see what other information will be debunked!
