Dancers' Studio West is dedicated to supporting and leading initiatives that contribute to the evolution of contemporary dance in Alberta. This #GivingTuesday, we need your help to continue our vital work of facilitating and uplifting Albertan artists. Entering and engaging with the dance field is more challenging than it has ever been, a truth of 2020 that has deeply affirmed our commitment to supporting emerging and early-career artists. With donor generosity and emergency... COVID relief grant funding, we shifted our first Quick+Dirty: A Festival of Emerging Artists and Ideas to the online platform. Towards this, we engaged expert mentorship from choreographer/filmmakers Associate Artist Linnea Swan and Jacob Niedzwiecki. We piloted Dance and/as discourse, a 3-week writing workshop that connected artists from Canada, USA, England, and India with literary critic and scholar Dr. Peter Dickinson to explore the relationship between creative writing and an embodied practice. In collaboration with Artist-in-Residence Pam Tzeng, we facilitate The Talking, Thinking, Dancing Body - Calgary, a critical conversation on our dancing body and the world it lives in, with folks tuning in from across the country to share their perspectives. And, finally, with support and collaboration from Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, we are at the beginning of hosting six Canadian artists and influences in experimental research through our Short-Term Residency program. Now more than ever, we at DSW value our role in the Alberta dance community as a support service organization. We are moving forward from our 40th anniversary season, honouring our legacy of supporting Alberta artists and innovating towards a sustainable creative ecology for generations of artists and dance enthusiasts to come. Visit our CanadaHelps page (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/56999) to support the work we do this Giving Tuesday. From the centre of our hearts to yours, Dancers' Studio West

We’re looking forward to seeing some new, familiar, and shining faces in this evening’s Talking, Thinking, Dancing Body! In the meantime, we’re thrilled to introduce our guest co-facilitator for this evening: Kara Bullock! Kara is a dance artist living in Mohkinstsis, on Treaty 7 Land. She is a mother to Wilder John Wolf. Currently she is working on a video blog style performance about a wellness guru encouraging people to fail, presented by Shooting Gallery Performance Serie...s’ Digital Edition. She is researching a solo work called One Human Boy Band through a creative residency at the DJD Dance Centre and originally supported by To The Awe (Pamela Tzeng and Elaine Weryshko). In 2020-2021 with the support of Calgary Arts Development, Kara will be working on an old solo work called aux.la.more, about craving intimacy and connection, explored through personal narratives, storytelling, text and movement. This phase of development will involve dramaturgical support from local theatre makers Caleigh Crow (Thumbs Up Good Work) and Kodie Rollan (Chromatic Theatre) and exploring her own cultural ancestry of mixed Filipinx and German heritage as a way of discovering resonant art making practices. During the last nine months she performed a movement, spoken word and music work with her husband Distance Bullock at containR Festival the Redux Series by Springboard Performance and explored a new work in mask and chorus with Elaine Weryshko. Tune in via the Zoom link in our Facebook event, and take a look at the reading links in the description for reference to begin tonight’s discussion.

Our next Talking, Thinking, Dancing Body - Calgary is coming up on Thursday, November 26th. Co-facilitator Pam Tzeng is not available and sends her regrets to be missing this TTDB. We are pleased that Calgary Artist Kara Bullock has agreed to co-lead the discussion with Artistic Director Sasha Ivanochko. We will be working from two texts to catalyze a conversation on ethics and aesthetics. Visit our Facebook event to RSVP and access the links for the readings! See you Thursday!

It is hard for me to find sufficient words at this moment to talk about Trish. But I want to share the news of her passing. For those of you who are not aware aware of her enormous influence on the development of dance in Toronto, but also Canada, I encourage you to read up. This is a wonderful video.
