Although our business tests for occupational hearing loss, so much of the loss we see is from recreational firearm use. People don't realize the damage they are doing to their hearing until it's too late. Some common things we hear from firearm users are: - "It's only a .22" - Almost all firearms create noise of more than 140 decibles, even a .22 calibre gun. Noise of this magnitude can PERMANENTLY damage hearing in a short amount of time. - "I only make one or two shots a... year" - When exposing yourself to noise levels of 140 decibels or greater, one or two shots is all it takes for permanent hearing loss - "I can't wear hearing protection when hunting. I need to hear." - FALSE - You CAN wear hearing protection, and you MUST. Electronic hearing protection is available that magnifies soft sounds but noise cancels. Check them out at your sporting goods store. The following article provides some great information on hearing loss from firearm use and tips on how to protect yourself. #protectyourhearing #firearmsafety https://www.asha.org//hearing/Recreational-Firearm-Noise-/

The effects of noise-induced hearing loss are far-reaching. For example, recent studies show workers exposed to noise are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from heart disease than unexposed workers. Hearing loss from noise limits your ability to hear high frequencies and to communicate adequately, possibly leading to social isolation. Noise-induced hearing loss is usual gradual so often goes undetected for far too long. Damage can be prevented but once it occurs it is permane...nt and irreversible. Hearing aides can help but do not exactly replicate the nuances of human hearing. Avoid noise. Monitor your hearing. Wear hearing protection.

Happy International Noise Awareness Day! Noise is everywhere - download the NIOSH Sound Level Meter App to help monitor noise on and off the job. Exposures of 85db or higher can cause hearing loss . #INAD2018 https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/noise/app.html

Hearing Protection has to become a habit. If you don’t have it you won’t use it. Put hearing protection where you need it and be sure to use it each and every time. https://go.usa.gov/xntSt
