Tuesday Tip: Stay on track with your Pap test screening. I know what youre thinking - whos Mary-Anne? And dang, shes got a great cervix ITS SO NORMAL. Did you know that I do A LOT of Paps for patients in my practice. YES - naturopathic doctors can perform pelvic exams - Paps, swabs and if you have the extra training like I do- pelvic floor screening/therapy (although I often refer to the amazing Trang Bui @invigophysio for more comprehensive physio).... Now back to Pap tests: Pap tests are part of a pelvic exam whereby a speculum is inserted into the vaginal canal - the cervix is seen and a sample of cells is taken from the cervix with a brush. The Ontario Cervical Screening Program recommends that people with a cervix (notice how Im not saying women?!) who are or have been sexually active (sexually active means- had sex at any point in their life- it does not matter if you havent had sex in years) are routinely screened (screening means looking for something in the absence of any symptoms). Pap tests should be done every 3 years starting at age 21. Regular screening should continue until AT LEAST AGE 70. Pap tests can stop at the age of 70 if a person has had 3 or more normal tests in the previous 10 years. Abnormal cells or Cervical Dysplasia (which can develop into cervical cancer) is what Pap trys screen for. The main culprit behind abnormal paps is HPV. The conventional approach is to watch and wait, increase the screening interval, do a colposcopy, and if needed a LEEP if there is progression. ***All I gotta say is - THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS TO SUPPORT CERVICAL HEALTH AND RESOLVE DYSPLASIA. Ive supported many people with cervixes get their Paps back into the normal zone.*** A Pap test via an ND (because we are outside of OHIP) costs about $20 - it is what the lab charges the practitioner. Ill do them within a scheduled in person visit. For many it can be easier than getting in with their GP... and perhaps it even takes a little burden off the healthcare system. Win-win-win.

Have your impact match your intent by using the right words to affirm individuals in transgender community. Ive fumbled, apologized and asked how to say it right many times. . These slides are extremely helpful. Read them, practice saying them out loud, refer back. Thank you @pinkmantary! Posted @withregram @pinkmantaray A reminder, especially during Pride month, that language is incredibly important. Especially when talking about marginalized communities. Words used inco...rrectly can have harsh impact, even with the best of intent. Of course, language changes rapidly as we evolve, so it can be difficult to keep up. Its okay to make mistakes. Apologize & make concerted efforts to learn the most respectful terminology. And always let the person with the identity lead. Swipe for some common mistakes/accidental micro-aggressions and my suggested corrections! Please note: These are my thoughts opinions drawn both from my own experience as a trans person and from listening to & learning from other trans folks around me! Its interesting how your relationship shifts with parents as you find yourself well into adulthood. How conversations, perspectives and priorities change.... . A few weeks ago we were talking about everything thats happening. I brought up how I was just now discovering the important distinction between not racist and anti-racist. I could see the wheels turning in his head as he processed and said, not racist...anti-racist...hmmm, that makes sense. . Interesting to think about the subtle and overt differences in the way well raise kids in the 2020s versus the 1990s. Total aside- I hope we bring back photo buttons. See more

Best headshot yet, or should I say- pelvispic. . Ive had a hard time keepin up with the gram this year Lets just say it has been pretty full-on IRL as the kids say . BIG move to a new home in a new hood with my life-partner (and Maeve , of course). #junctiontriangle ... . Expanding clinic operations with my business-partner @drtanyalee.nd. Im talking full-time admin , 2 additional NDs, an Osteopath, and an RMT . . Amazing opportunities to educate and empower women about their (pelvic) health. I had an I know that guy moment today. I was wondering through a museum in a Slovenian castle (nbd, right!?), when I came across an exhibit highlighting one of the pioneers of naturopathic medicine. . 150 years ago, a Swiss doctor named Arnold Rikli based his practice philosophy around the healing power of nature- specifically sunlight, fresh air and water. Thousands of Europeans from the 1860s until WW1 flocked to his healing centre at Lake Bled, Slovenia. . His prescrip...tions included hiking, sunbathing, healthy vegetarian meals, massage, saunas and... of course, refreshing swims in Lake Bled (brisk!- my expression says it all). . Rikli believed many people lived in excess (too much food, too little exercise and growing pollution/chemical exposure). Youre totally looking at a screen right now. Put The Phone Down. . Intentional (or unintentional) screen-free time may arguably be the best thing you can do for your health. Can anyone think of some reasons why? . You dont have A.D.D. You have a phone with apps that are designed to be addictive and distracting.... . I hate to break it to you - but your physiology overrides your willpower. YES. YOUR PHYSIOLOGY OVERRIDES YOUR WILLPOWER. . What that means is the dopamine response you get from looking a something on your phone is going to drive you to look at your phone- even if you dont want to. . So. What can you do? TURN OFF YOUR PHONE 30-60 minutes before you want to be sleeping. Interestingly- if our phone is turned off- when we get the impulse to look at our phone, we wont want to wait the 60 seconds for it to reboot and well leave our phone off. . TRY IT. See more

Look at the herb wall behind me! It makes me smile every time I walk into work. I LOVE having a dispensary (no- not that kind of dispensary) at my clinic. Botanicals can effectively support various processes in the body. Im holding Echinacea in the above photo. Id put it in my top 5 herbs.
