Today is Firefighters' National Memorial Day - This day is a national remembrance day to remember firefighters who have lost their lives while on the job. The f...lags at City Hall have been at half-staff since end of day Friday and will return to full mast on Monday morning to pay respects and honour those who have lost their lives protecting the lives of the people in their communities. Duncan fire department has responded mutual aid with multiple other fire departments, to a large fire at a recycling facility near the nanaimo airport. Traffic may be affected on the trans canada highway

The strong smell of smoke in the cowichan valley today seems to be coming up from the large fires in Washington state. There are no known fires in the valley. This serves as a reminder to be fire safe especially during the hot dry times.
